Steam UI Update

Rather than make an new thread I thought I might as well ask in here, I'm about to format my system and upgrade to windows7, instead of re-downloading everything I'd like to backup my steam folder, now I just want to confirm what I have to do, I backup the 'steamapps', install windows7, then install steam again, then move my 'steamapps' folder back across right ?

Back up the entire steam folder just incase, but yes, I believe that's all I did when moving from XP to Vista...

that should work... but is barely relevant to the thread :D

I know, it's just I've made a couple of threads recently that got locked for asking questions that apparently are asked to frequently so I didn't want to make the same mistake again so I'm trying to limit myself from making threads unless I have to.

Anyway thanks a lot mate.

Just back up the whole "steam" folder that way you don't have to reinstall.

Also people find that by only backing up steamapps you have to reisntal dx for every game.

So just copy the whole thin g and then run steam it will update and be done.

Yep thanks for the reminder, backing everything up now, windows7 here I come !!

Back on topic though it seems a lot of people have been having problems with the in game overlay while using the new UI, but as steam have been releasing updates daily for the beta UI I presume it'll be fixed later today.

One thing I have noticed is that it seems to 'forget' my layout preferences for the games library each time I close it

But if you can't see why it should consume more memory it's usually a sign of poor or rushed programming. Not optimized, getting bloated etc.

As long as it doesn't cripple my system, releases the resources when they're not needed, etc. I'm not really fussed. I very rarely check out how much a process is using. I think that's a little bit obsessive really especially if you have a ton of RAM.

It's like when superfetch first appeared everyone was moaning how much RAM it was consuming. But you're not using the RAM for anything else so why not use it to optomise your OS?

its a nice little addition imo, the old UI was getting very dated. Got to say i'm impressed so far
Agreed. Have literally just switched to the new UI and seen it for a handful of seconds but it looks cleaner and more modern than the previous UI. I think the old UI did its job but just looked a big old and tired; replacing it with a new layout/UI is a very good idea.

my downlaods get suspended unless i try and launch them (tf2). dunno if thats the steam beta or what, a bit strange tho.

Great update very slick..

Another thing I've noticed, the new UI doesn't have the Win7 integration like the normal one ie the green progress bar for downloads/installs in the task bar
