Steam wont start...

Seems to be a common problem at the moment after the last major update.

Do you have any custom skins installed at all?

Sorry for not being very helpful, if you have not already had a look/seach through the Steam forums, have a look, there'll be plenty of people with the same problem I'd have thought, there's been a couple of threads on the same problem on OcUK too:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/

Did you re-install over the top of Steam, or afresh after an uninstall?

yea ive had that happen, just got to restart windows and hope, mine cleared up :)

Could always backup steam games and reinstall it, might help...

I had a problem where I'd run Steam.exe and it would appear in Task Manager but not appear. It turned out that my Router was blocking some ports it needed. As soon as I created the rules, ran Steam.exe again it popped up. :) Don't know if that's the reason here, but you could clear your event log on the Router, load Steam, and see if anything is recorded.

Latest Steam update seems to be playing havoc with a lot of users. As melipone1 says delete client registry blob might be worth a try. Did it on Thursday and it's been plain sailing since.

Prob a very daft question but have you changed any of your security settings recently ? Firewalls etc maybe blocking the connection

I've deleted the blob, it renews is and the problem persists.

No

Sounds like you need a clean install of steam. This happened to me once before. Take your steamapps folder and cut/paste it somewhere else for now. Then use add/remove to get rid of steam. Then use crap cleaner to get rid of any bits add/remove didn't delete. Restart and then download and install steam again. Then copy/paste the steamapps folder back in and hopefully steam will be working again and your games will still be installed (just click install on the game and steam should verifie the files and they'll come up as installed again).

This is what I did when I got the problem and it worked fine the first time. Did it again recently when I reinstalled windows (downloaded steam and copied my old steamapps folder back in) but some of my games had to be downloaded again for some reason. Hope you remember your username/password

Have you checked to see if perhaps Steam is being blocked then?

Not to sound to funny, but you only seem to be posting "no" and not saying what else you have tried from the suggestions posted.

Even if his connections are blocked, Steam should at the very least start up and complain that he has no net access.

I'd say his problem is that he needs a totally new install of Steam, which means totally removing the whole thing and starting afresh. Make a backup of the steamapps folder lest you nuke all your games along with your install :)

Maybe he simply doesn't have a clue what else to try and wants our ideas :)

Yes, I gave it full permission. I can also contact steam servers to renew the blob.

I think I've tried all the suggestions, including starting in safe mode. Updating graphics drivers.

There has been the suggestion on steam forums that the issue is one of 'skins' which are a new introduction with the recent update... the theory is the program is starting but cannot be seen
