Steam wont start...

Maybe uninstall it with a specialist program, such as Uninstaller Pro (i think) to make sure all registry entries are removed.
Run Crap cleaner and let it fix all registry errors/bugs it picks up.
Reinstall, see what happens?

Even if his connections are blocked, Steam should at the very least start up and complain that he has no net access.

No, it wouldn't do it for me. It would not appear at all until I give it access, even though it was shown as running under Task Manager.

Maybe he simply doesn't have a clue what else to try and wants our ideas :)

That's fine, all I was saying was he should post and let us know how he's getting on. ;)

Happened to me last night.

Double clicked Steam icon, waited for 3 or so minutes, checked the processes in task manager and it said Steam was running but I could not see it.
Ended the process, double clicked the icon again and it worked

mine just updated itself and now i cant play any of my games.

Who should i contact to get a full refund?

Hi guys,

I had exactly the same thing. Steam.exe was running in task manager after the update but no icon and steam would not run nor any games if i rolled back with system restore it would work but auto update and mess up again. I also had a thing saying ending program hidden window when shutting down XP. I thought it was something to do with my firewall but disabled or enabled it wouldnt work i then remember i had ghostsurf which has a privacy monitor running all the time uninstalled that and bingo steam now works.

I gaurantee it is something to do with some security software on your PC maybe Nortons.

Cheers,
Hugest

You'll not get one, unless you're joking.

It's likely a firewall issue, what firewall issue do you have?

Also have you tried stopping the process in task manager then trying to run Steam again?

cleanbluesky, what firewall are you using?

:D

But still if i cant get back on, i might not be.

They release an update (updates it without my permission) and now my computer cant play any of the games i paid for...

Heads will roll...

Exactally the same as above really.

Zone Alarm took a dislike to Steam for some reason, would start to load show in task manager but then hang.

A reinstall ( HL2/Steam) sorted it.

Sorry, last night i was watching my team getting hammered, while getting equally as hammered to compensate.

Its started up fine today, haven't gone in to a game yet, but the steam account thing is loading up and it wasn't doing that after the update yesterday.

Cheers for the help though.

my recent problems have been involving an exception in main. I get an error saying something along the lines of;

steamerror.jpg

and that's when i try to run it. i had a look at all the usual problems, checked the steam forums and then ended up opening it from inside the its directory instead of the recently used apps bit in xp. and it worked. bloody weird imo.

Grrr... anger levels rising.

I am having the same problem now... it was working fine last night, now for some reason it wont load at all. I tried deleting client.bob too :(

Well. I fixed my problem, I uninstalled Ghost Surf trial that I was using and it's fine again.

It seems steam doesnt like running with certain programs.

the ghost surf was listed on the steam support site update as one of the causing pieces of software.

ive got a slightly different problem where steam refuses to log in at all. all security settings look ok and remade the rule for steam.exe to allow all .

if i log in with wrong details it says login failed, try again. if i put correct details in, it says steam server cant be reached. its fresh install of steam, no previous folder. on a another pc on my network, steam works fine :S but its to low powered to play games ;)
