Love it or Loathe it, don't start a fan boy war.
I have a question to ask.

My internet, is fast, the fastest that Virgin can do. However my steam download speeds are very slow, normally less then 500kb per second.

Is there anyway of changing this? can I make it move a bit faster?
I'm on a wireless network, in total, 2 laptops, 3 PC's. Rarely all are on at the same time.

Could the slow speeds have something to do with which Steam servers I connect to?

In the settings you can state your connection speed. Maybe if that is set incorrectly it can make a difference.

I haerd thats the max download limit for Steam. Nay matter of your speed, that connection is top, I only usually get about 300kb. :(

Steam rules. :D

Ive downloaded at over 1mb/s before, most on the time it doesnt tell me. Just depends what time, server load, and connection to the server you have. Sometimes it has trickled along at 36kb/s.

Steam is extremely hit and miss when it comes to download speeds. Recently it's been fine for me. I've been hitting over 2Mb/s.

I'm generally lucky to get over 1Mb/s.

I have been getting faster and faster connections recently got right up to 2.3MB/s once with BE up to 24meg.

I've hit 3/4mb per second before.

I really don't understand why I can't get a better download speed at times :(

I've changed where the server is based in the steam options, but to very little effect.
I can download files at very high speeds but when it comes to steam

anyway at least I'm not the only one.

I usualy get about 1Mb for half my download then anything from 1-500Kbs for the rest of it.

This is on VM 8Mb.

iv gota 4mb virgin connection, roughly 300-400 but sometimes 1mb+mdepending on the games/time i download

You do know that Virgin cap your speed if you download more than a couple of gig or so during the day (10am - 9pm I think)?

That could be why at times you don't get the full speed. Also, bare in mind that if you do hit the limit, the speed cap lasts for 5 hours regardless.

I recently bought Streetfighter 4 through Steam and downloaded through my Virgin cable connection.

It was coming down at the max speed my connection would allow, precisely at 9 (I think it was 9...) I could only get 200k/sec...

I suddenly remembered - There are limits you can download before you get throttled and certain times effect download speeds etc.

Google or check the Virgin webby...

I had no idea about that, will bare that in mind in future.

Thank you (Y)
