SteamOS just vapor???

Valve are notorious for taking a long time to finish stuff. They always deliver an outstanding product in the end though so it's always worth the wait.

Cool, I am hoping I can ditch Windows, so I can play games in that... Might still be games the req. winblows though, all the privacy concerns about Win10 sound abit bad...

Steam runs fine on linux no need for steamos, just a more limited range of games available, unless you use wine.

I have just switched back to Windows after 2 years of Linux, only because of gaming.
Even Wine just doesn't cut it.
I am going to wait a bit longer before installing Linux again, at least until Valve finish doing what they are doing.

It seems to have dropped of radar, it was hot long ago...
SteamOS is the hottest thing in PC gaming right now. People don't realise it but this is a game changer.

Doesn't officially launch until November the 10th. And it will be years until the real benefits of a free open platform for PC gaming show itself. Very exciting times though.

SteamOS is purely gaming focused. Its setup as Switch on >> Login >> play.

You won't be replacing your desktop PC for browsing, internet banking, video calling, emailing or anything else. That isn't the focus of SteamOS. if you want to do that you are better with Windows/Linux/OSX + Steam Client.

The biggest problem SteamOS faces is the confusion and misinformation circulating.

Every gamer should watch this video. It clearly explains what SteamOS is and is not.

The number of games with native support for SteamOS/Linux is increasing on a weekly basis.

2 years ago there were only a handful of Linux games. Now we are days away from the SteamOS launch and its got a launch catalogue bigger then either the Xbox One or PS4 had.

The comparisons to the Xbox One and PS4 aren't really relevant.

And a lot of the SteamOS games tend to just be indie stuff. I'll be the first to admit, that more "heavy hitting" titles have been released on SteamOS though. But it's far from being good enough to actually use.

To use SteamOS would remove the ability to actually enjoy a gaming PC for me.

It's heading down the right track for sure & devs are producing titles on it too.

It's not quite worth the license fee you don't have to pay for windows though for me. I think it just needs some big name titles to seriously outperform their windows counterparts before people start taking notice.

What problems are you seeing? I can't say SteamOS has been 100% trouble free for me either but its far better now then when I first looked at it.

For launch I think AMD graphic performance is going to be the biggest problem. Disappointed at how little progress AMD have made with Linux drivers. Early last year it looks really promising but its still short of where it needs to be.

I can only think they are planning ahead for Vulkan. Since that has roots in Mantle it might get them up to par with NVIDIA for newer games. No idea how easy it would be for developers to add Vulkan compatibility. Ashes of the Singularity ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/228880/discussions/1/490123938427454110/ ) appears to be the first Vulkan game for SteamOS we'll see. Guess we'll know more then the is released.

The elephant in the room, which will always be in the room.
To use SteamOS would remove the majority of my games library on PC, as well as overall usability and ease of use for many things.

SteamOS won't go anywhere for the majority of people.

And then of course there's the fact I run AMD, so I'm buggered when a title does have Linux support lol.

To be honest, my linux Laptop has been running steam just fine for quite some time now.

I have been looking at games that run on Linux, and sure, there are some right dogs out there, but therte are some great ones too! - Half life series, DOTA 2 etc, but also with Wine, I amstruggling to think of a game, that I have, that I have not been playing just sweet on Linux.

I have little use of my left hand anymore, and so I am limited to what games I can play these days, so FPS games are off the menu ( Devastated ), but thankfully, I am a Massive Dawn Of War lover, and so, they also play well under Wine.

I really do wish that they were also developed for Steam under Linux like they are in Windows.

AMD issues under Linux?

I find this rather odd. MY Linux Laptop is running ATI Graphics and its spot on. My Windows Laptop is running Intel+nVidia and when I tried it when new, I had issues, and so its been Windows ever since, but the Linux one with ATI is great.

Similarly, my Linux PC is alos running ATI graphics, and that too, I have had Zero issues with. Admittedly, 7770 so, not the latest card I admit, but Im nto a heavy gamer, and those cards do all my games better than I need them to, so...

The last time I tried to play DoW II on a Windows box, it had some sort of Windows Live Game thing I couldn't get around to actually launch the games (I wasn't signing up for it just to launch a game). Have they removed that spawn of Satan from the builds?

Also, have you played the Trine games? They're Linux native. I really enjoyed those. Reminded me of playing old side scrollers on Amiga. But a lot prettier.

HA, LOL no, that does now seem to have gone, or rather, its still there, but its not as invasive anymore.

I fully agree however... these things are put into the games, and they utterly ruin the games for me. I dont like it and I dont want it. Every game you get ythese days, seem to have to run alongwith some extra junk that wants to have some control over your computer in some way, and I am gettting more and more fed up with it to be honest.

Trine games? well, yes, they are in my list, so, I have bought them at one time, but I cannot say that I have given them a fair run? - I have simply gone looking for a load of games that run on Linux, and selected them if they have been either looking funky, or simply cheap as chips, and I have a ridiculously massive games collection in my steam list, and I only actually play a few of them.

My steam folder is ... 477GB - wow!

I have done the steam backup on a great deal of them, and so, what I think I will do, is back them up again, and delete the folder and restore them to clean the folders up of the junk files, see if this saves any space?

I did noticce at one time, when I tried to copy my steam folder over to linnux, it still wantedd to re-download almost all of the files anyway... I was rather annoyed at that, especially as I must have a good 50GB+ for just Linux games.

Then again, I have also tried this with my macs too... Same thing.

This might make a cool steambox...
