Steep

I thought that, couldn't be further from the truth.

Don't they work just near the mountains or something and go skiing/snowboarding every minute they get? Sure I read that somewhere.

They did lift the base physics from something else though to get a working prototype going but I think the physics were massively re-written. The base code was from a jet ski game/physics simulation.

I'll try find where I read it. I haven't bought the game so can't comment if its good or bad. Had a quick go on the beta and it seemed alright. For a team of 40 people making it in their spare time its great.

The info is actually in the video:

Like I and other boarder/skiier friends have said: The devs haven't been snowboarding or skiing. It feels like they lifted the game mechanics from a racing game and adjusted the physics a bit. I haven't laughed so much at a game in a long time.

what specifically makes you say that? Are you playing the release or the beta? How much time spent in it?

I enjoyed the beta, still waiting for my release copy.

It's a different game to Amped and the like. It's far more about finding your own routes down the mountain and exploring than just running a level over and over for a high score.

Timing on the trick system is brutal though, found it a little unforgiving in beta.

I found the Beta a little dull tbh. It felt like the sort of game that I might play with a hangover to ease me into the day. Any big changes from the Beta (added modes etc)?

Only played about an hour last night. Coordinating the tricks is hard but then busting out a stalefish 720 on a snowboard is hard!

I probably spent an hour on the beta, enough to realise that what (for example, when on skiis) standing on flat ground I can do constant 360 turns. Something else I picked up was the switch on stance when boarding, and no impact to ability. I also found the jumping mechanism (either when riding along or going off a lip) laughable and very far from the truth.

I'm not used to it yet but I think I read you push sticks opposite direction for flatland spins. Jumping is a bit hard to get used to. It is odd that there is no impact to riding switch I guess but i don't find that particularly detrimental to enjoyment.

It's pretty much impossible to translate something as dynamic as snowboarding to a few buttons and analogue sticks and make it a perfect simulation (flight sims have joysticks, driving sims have wheels etc.)

When holding jump I do tend to just stop at the top of some ramps. A bit annoying.

Also I'd like a bit more realism where when I land completely sideways I'd like to catch an edge and go flying. Again you just tend to stop.

Other than that it's a decent game. Never touched skiing mind as it doesn't interest me.

Played a fair bit last night and I'm enjoying it. Landings are probably over forgiving. Haven't found any rails yet so not sure that exists. All in all it's fun. I like the open world aspect. Controls actually requiring learning in order to do well which is better than button mashing.

Overall I'm liking it. I like the freedom. It feels far more like snowboarding feels to me than other games I've played (not the wierd landings, more the overall feel). The orientation towards freeride is more aligned with how I see snowboarding than the normal park orientation. I still haven't seen a rail or jib mechanic to this which seems a bizarre omission. Does that come later or just missing?

Think I am going for it on this tonight. The gold edition is like 30 quid now which seems a good price including all the DLC

uplay its £34 and then if you have 100 upoints or more you can convert 100 to make a 20% off voucher code which then makes it £29 and something pence
