Stefano Domenicali steps down as Ferrari F1 team boss

Strangely enough I was wondering how long he'd have this morning. That look on Di Montezemolo's face during the race in Bahrain was ominous.

Ferrari really needed a change.

Seems to be a trend, axe your team principal and make immediate gains. Working for Mercedes and Mclaren this season.

McLaren are miles behind where they were even last season. Things went well in Melbourne, but since they've been thoroughly outperformed by every other Mercedes car.

Last season: Aus/Mal/Bhr: 13pts
This season: Aus/Mal/Bhr: 43pts

miles behind.

They're still in the mix easily with the other Merc powered teams (apart from Merc)

I'm surprised that he lasted as long as he did.
They hired what they believed to be the best driver in F1, back in 2010.
They wanted success at any cost.

2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
5 Years and no titles.

For Ferrari - this is intolerable.
Even McLaren who turned into a bunch of wimps and wanted to play happy families, got rid of Whitmarsh.

I personally, would've offered the R.Brawn a chance. He may have accepted.

I should have pointed out (if it wasn't clear enough with the reference to the other Mercedes cars) that I was talking relatively. They've dropped back around 0.3-0.4 to the Mercedes compared to this point last year, and have been overtaken by Williams and Force India (though FI were roughly on par with McLaren early on in 2013 to be fair).

Your comparison is invalid imo

1stly - Every team is over a second behind Merc, and being as McL are just a customer with a brand new rule base (rather than the ones from last season which had been in place for a number of years) its not that surprising at all that customer teams are that far behind - its much more surprising that Ferrari and Renault are so much behind.

2nd - until JB's problem during/ just after the SC in the last race he was chasing down 3rd and competing well with the FI (and well ahead of Williams)

They are not behind compared to last year at all

Interesting news.....Ross Brawn coming back hopefully :)

More interestingly Bob Bell has resigned from his job as Chief Technical Officer for Mercedes :) hopefully moving to Ferrari :)

If everyone had the Mercedes engine, they'd be behind the Red Bull and likely the Ferrari too, fighting with the Toro Rosso's with only Sauber, Caterham and Marussia behind (who knows where Lotus will be when all the work experience kids have actually actually worked out what the buttons do, but they seem to have a solid enough car now).

I realise we've only had 3 races, but I don't get why people have been so positive about McLaren (I'm generalising here, obviously not everyone shares that view).

Tricky to guess who would take the position. Dont forget that ross brawn left after disagreeing with the new mercedes management structure. Only other person i could imagine is Pat Fry i guess. Everyone from lotus has been stripped away already.

His was offered a job a Merc but because they done away with a Team Principal position he left.

So I can't see him going to Ferrari when he could have stayed with Merc.

I know its quite a stretch and thats why i said

"Brawn back to ferrari, with more power then he was being offered at Mercedes"

I think that bit is quite crucial.

Aside from this interesting speculation, which i very much doubt this will happen, it will be interesting to see who gets put in to the role.
