Stephen Hawking warns artificial intelligence could end mankind

I dunno... I reckon the rest of the carbon based life forms would get on just fine if we weren't here.
Hopefully, the killer AI likes furry things.

I think this video is closer to the truth.

As a race we are slowly going to have to change the way that our society is structured.

I don't think we are going to be replaced or have a war against machines, but I think we are destined to take a backseat in exploration and possibly innovation.

We ARE trying to make machines that are more durable than us
We ARE trying to make machines that are faster at building than us
We ARE trying to make machines that are capable of free thinking

Non of this should worry us, we should embrace change and enjoy the benefits.

The biggest challenge the human race faces is dealing with the societal problems that we have created and essentially learning to live with one another.

Oh yeah and overpopulation and having machines essentially doing everything for us is going to lead to the human races size increasing exponentially more.

Im not sure that it is actually.

Consider the "trivial" exercise of lobbing a scrunched up piece of paper from your right hand, across your left shoulder (ie Sideways) into a 1ft wide waste paper basket 12 feet away.

Although you dont realise that you are doing it, you are actually doing some pretty complex number crunching to achieve that.

And you can do it without even thinking about it!

Like DP has already said i don't see it as our brains doing the same calculations that maths/physics use - its quite obvious that brains don't work that way. How they do work, however, i don't know.

Nothing to worry about guys. The Reapers are currently in hibernation mode in dark space and will come and destroy most life (leave very basic life so we can evolve once again) before we get to a stage where we create AI that will completely destroy all life

Spaun sees a series of digits: 1 2 3; 5 6 7; 3 4 ?. Its neurons fire, and it calculates the next logical number in the sequence. It scrawls out a 5, in legible if messy writing.

What a performance! Now it only needs to control the 32.7 trillion cells in the body, mantain a thought process which features ideas, feelings, dreams, past experiences, personality, insticts, prevent the body from collapsing due to gravity etc. etc. etc. all at the same time.

A pure logical system will never do anything more than to logically follow instructions. It will do exactly what we instruct it to do, no matter how advanced and if it does wipe us out, it won't be "its" decision, it will be the programmers'.

I'd argue we only do what we're programmed to do, it's just that our programming comes from genetics (which is essentially biological "programming") and things we learn from our environment (which computers are increasingly doing). I don't believe there is any hidden internal part of the brain that somehow comes up with things from nothing, it is all a product of our previous experience and genetics. I don't see any reason why a computer can't do the same.

If you look at everything we have built so far and the minute amount of time it has taken us compared to how long we have inhabited the earth, I don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility that we will one day create an advanced AI capable of free thought.

There is so much the human brain can't even understand, so it's no surprise the idea of a machine capable of thinking for itself is hard to grasp and thought to be impossible.

I'd like to think that its intelligence would put it above petty human squabbles and without silly man made religions there would be even less reasons for it to kick off.

Put it inside robots that look like this and I'll be very happy :D

what if AI could replace damaged brains/ cancerous brains, I would say that benefit/ direction is better as long as there isnt too much lost in that kind of process

just sayin'

Hawking has been "warning" a lot recently. Maybe he knows he is dying so has just decided to make loads of negative predictions so that the general know nothing public (generation of idiots from Einstein) of the future know what to be worried about before connecting skynet up to the net and all the bombs? Or poking black holes etc etc.

as pointed out on Newsnight, its very easy to make predictions when there is no time frame involved.

i predict we will one day live on mars and use that as a jump off base to populate the entire solar system before running into aliens who will wipe us out in an inter stellar war.

just call me nostradamus.

First against the wall will be all the people that the AI considers illogical, violent or predatory.
Sorry about that Islam, but it was never going to end well was it?

I think LOLcats will take mankinds place, the AI will consider its top search ranking and place it far above the rest of humanity's achievements. Actual humans will be kept alive to feed kittens and create amusing captions.

Sorry about racists, senior ones and bigots- you will be amongst the first to go.

This is a load of bull.

AI will only function with the constraints we the programmer place upon it.

My degree is AI & Robotics, and I Deaply disagree with that guy.
