Stereo the wrong way round :(

Hi, my computer's stereo audio is flipped (so left is right and right is left) on the front panel headers. It is the correct way round out the back.
This means it does get rather confusing when playing games and as a headset that I use is not symmetrical it cannot really be worn backwards. Can anyone suggest any reasons for this? I'm using on-board audio

I suspect the conector on the mainboard has simply been plugged in the wrong way round.

Pin 5 is Line-out R
Pin 9 is Line-out L

Pins are
9.7.5.3.1
10.8.6.4.2

For HD Front Panel Audio:
1.MIC2_L
2.GND
3.MIC2_R
4.-ACZ_DET
5. LINE2_R
6. GND
7. FAUDIO_JD
8. No Pin
9. LINE2_L
10. GND

For AC'97 Front Panel Audio:
1. MIC
2. GND
3. MIC Power
4. NC
5. Line Out (R)
6. NC
7. NC
8. No Pin
9. Line Out (L)
10. NC

It's all in the motherboard manual.

Yeah, I had wondered that but when I checked there was no real way of getting it the wrong way round. This was as there was no 8th pin on the mobo but also no place for an 8th pin to go on the cable. This meant it could only go one way round. Thanks for the help though.

It's nothing to do with pin 8 though. That's No Conection or No Pin anyway, it does nothing. Pins 5 & 9, would be the pins that have been swapped. I think there is a diagram on page 18 of the manual.

Oh sorry, I think I understand now, sorry I misunderstood. I thought you meant the connector was plugged into the motherboard incorrectly. Just to check, do you mean that the connector was wired the wrong way round when I got it in the first place?

It's tricky without seeing it in the flesh. But if I remember correctly the Audio out is normally a 3 pin socket, that is pins 9-7-5. If the socket has been fitted 5-7-9 instead of 9-7-5 that would do it. But it could be the wire are swapped. Are there any markings on the connector with wires in it. (it should be marked on the MoBo, anyway)

It says HD audio? and I think that is it.

Might give the other connector a try later to see if that has the same problem? From what I have heard (Pun not intended) AC97 is rather old and poorer quality, do you will it still work (even if badly)?

This. Just turn the 3 pin connector around.

I remember it was a right fiddle when I set up my desktop as my case had individual single pins for everything and wiring them up to the mobo was right PITA.
 
I'm confused. I'm probably just being blonde but I can't see a 3 pin connector, its just that one 10 pin cable. I read that sometimes they come separately but with my case it was just the one thing. I hope that makes sense.

If you feel brave you can swap pins 5&9 over in the header. They should come out fairly easily. Just use a pin or cocktail stick to press in the little latches on the side. They then just pop out the back.

I'd take one out at once and see which channel you lose first LEFT or RIGHT. Then just make a note and put them back in the CORRECT position.

DONT DO IT WITH YOUR PC TURNED ON. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

It might be worth looking at the other end of that cable, could be swapped at that end. But I suspect it won't be as easy to spot
