Steve Jobs has died. What effect, if any, will it have on Apple and the tech industry?

Apple will be fine. Jobs has put a lot of time into making sure that there is a strong corporate identity/ethos/method of working within the company so there's no repeat of when he went the first time. The whole 'top 100' thing who throw ideas around, Apple University, hiring people who are in love with the company without being fanboys, taking his time choosing the right people for the job in the high positions etc. As someone put it on another site, he was like the stabiliser wheels on the bike, and now they've come off I think there's a general air of confidence that the bike is going to stay up fine.

His counterpart spends far more money on stopping the 'cancer that is Linux'.

Not quite! Although at one point there was a time when MS spent more money trying to do away with Linux but that's MS not Bill Gates, he's quite the philanthropist having pledged more than half his wealth to charity. (~£24billiion)
