Feel it's the right time for him, let some of the young guys have a crack at it and get ready for the future.

Question is who would you give it to?

What, the captaincy?

I will bet the general public consensus is to go with Rooney. I am talking tabloid press/average man on the street here - not the people on this forum!

England, unfortunately, don't have a lot of natural 'captains' at the moment. A bit controversial perhaps, but I would go for Joe Hart. Why? Well, he is, more than anyone else, guaranteed his place in the national team. He comes across as quite mature and sensible, and he is still likely to be there in 10 years time.

I always laugh at these retirements. They always come when the likelihood of getting selected drops. You should always be available for section for your country.
Still thanks for taking part in the 1-5 demolition of the germans many years ago. Thats the only thing of mention an England team has done in ages.

Don't agree with this whole 'you should always be available for your country' thing.

A player knows best (usually) when his body can't cope with the demands of playing as much as it used to be. I think it's the sensible thing for a player to do - it clears things up and everyone knows where they stand.

Cahill as captain? Not for me. Not the most vocal on the pitch and I'd prefer someone in midfield and someone for the future.

Jordan Henderson would be my shout. England's best midfielder right now and captained the under 21's for a wee while.

Agreed with others in that it's certainly the right time, he will be what, 36 come the Euros? Need to be bedding the young lads in now.

Cheers Stevie G, been a good servant to the country.

With Gerard now gone, who do we count on for the scintillating pre and post match press conferences

........

For England?

Judging from this WC, Rooney was woeful.
Hart filled me with as much confidence as Brad Jones does for 'Pool fans.
Cahill is good but I didn't think he was over 27!
