So, do I change my car?

Following the RR day, and having a look at the cars inside, I am fancying an STi. The local dealer to me has a 305bhp PPP STI for 20k on a 55 plate. Negotiations will be had. Much as I enjoy my Jeep, its fun in relatively straight lines, but corners frighten it. The Cobra gets nowhere near as much use as I would like in a sports car, due to weather, practicality etc. I really need 4 seats, just in case, but want something fun for when on my own.
The STi seems to be a win-win really. BUT, I will always hanker for a v8, I am only becoming a partial convert to the jap thing.

Give me some encouragement guys and gals.!!

If you are after a V8 and practical (ish) something like a monaro or mustang would fit that bill. However that STI would still be nice albeit you wouldn't get the V8 rumble.

I'd rather a Monaro over an STI anyday of the week although to be fair I have never driven either.

Don't put yourself down Zip - the ones here are built in the UK IIRC ;)

I like the Monaro, with a nice exhaust system and a couple of tweaks they sound the business, besides they go pretty well and from what I've heard are a lot better than people were expecting.

Good points:

Fun - the noise, the power delivery, the brutishness of it, the grip, the balance and composure. In the wet they are just MIND BLOWING.

Practical - 4 decent seats, ISOFIX for baby, reasonable boot (good size but access is somewhat restricted by the rear quarters), reasonably comfy ride, seats are nice, 6 speed box helps with motorway miles.

Reliable - bullet proof all round, although both my WRX's blew two o2 sensors each (warranty fix).

Bad points:

Residual values - poor. Haggle price to the death to minimise the loss.

Upkeep - pricey game looking after an Sti. Tyres and brakes are the killer, servicing isn't too bad, decent intervals.

Economy - The car is capable of being economical on fuel - but that relies on moderating the right foot, which is completely impossible, so just expect 20mpg or less and you wont be disappointed.

Image - Suffering of late as the undesirables get their hands on new age shapes (they've already wrecked the image of the classics).

Paint - Chips off if you as much as look at it funny.

HTH. :)

i saw a monaro VXR a week or so back (newer 6 liter version as i recall). my god it went like the stink and sounded gorgeous when he floored it

What an odd thing to do

As soon as Holden falls flat(come on comet, hit to the factory) the other cars in Oz should become cheaper :p :D

Stupid taxing every car built outside Australian borders to protect Holden

OT - Zip - what are the roads like down under? Are the surfaces generally quite good?

What's the speed limit there? Do you have fixed speed cameras like we do?

We have almost all sorts of roads imaginable. Extremely smooth flat ones to ones with pot holes that resemble craters :p
The maximum Speed limit in most states and Territories is 110kph. But in The northern Territory they dont have speed limits except for around towns.
There are some fixed speed cameras but they are few and far between.
A lot of the Fixed ones are near exits and Entries to major Highways and Motorways.
They usually use police with speed cameras in under cover cars hiding on the side of the road behind bushes or trees most the time and you hardly ever see them apart from a small sign that you see about 500 metres after uve past them that says "Speeding Kills"
Not long ago they trialed helicopters with speed cameras attached to them for a long weekend around this area. But they haven't done that ion this area since then.
We also have to look out for kangaroos jumping out in front of cars and we have to look out Wombats if we are driving in an area where they could live.

Cheers for the replies guys.

Dont worry, a V8 will always be in my heart, and garage, but the Jeep does not satisfy some thing, I am not sure what...

With the STi, I can have best of both, 4dr practicallity, and a bit of fun. 4dr is a bit of a must with the missus as well. Drop her off shopping, and then go off for a hoon in the same car :D

ALSO, getting rid of the Jeep and Cobra, would give the the garage space, and spare money to start my new project. I have always wanted to build a '34 Ford Hotrod.

Merlin : Ecomony is not an issue, atm I drive a V8 :), plus there are a few other savings as well.. I pay 2 taxes and 2 insurances at the moment

Off now to go and discuss it with the dealer.

My money is on you falling in love with it.

Good luck. Get a test drive, and a proper one too - with just you in the car. Have faith in the 4wd - just boot the crap out of it and get a proper feel for what it's all about.

you want: practical, fast and a v8, and you've got 20k.....why has no one here suggest an e39 m5? :s not 4x4 but very good traction control and none-sports mode :)
