Hi, Ive just built a system using the E2180 core 2 duo chip and when I took it out of the box there was a sticker on the underside of it. I thought to remove it but im sure that it said do no remove. I was wondering if anyone else had seen the same sticker on the bottom and did you remove it? Im just a bit concerned that it will screw the system up if I leave it on there.

The processor is only reaching about 40oC max so i dont think it would have damaged it yet. What do u recon? Shall i take the heatsink/fan off and take the sticker off?

Thanks

A lot of retailers put their own warranty sticker on the underside so that they can tell if the CPU came from them so I'd personally check to see what it says and as it's on the underside leave it as it won't do any harm.

Thanks IAmATeaf, ill have a look when I get back. Has anyone else had a sticker on the bottom of their core 2 duo processor??

Ive had several and none have ever had one. As long as its in the middle of the chip and not on the gold contacts its should be ok

Was it a retail or OEM chip?

It was a retail chip (with heatsink and fan). Ill ask I think in the shop where i got it from

If it was a retial chip then they mustve broken the seal on the box. They couldve voided any intel warranty by sticking a sticker on it as the documents that come with it clearly state do not touch the underside of the cpu, this id imagine also applies to sticking things to it

thats true actually, the box was broken when I came to install it which I thought was funny

No sticker on my retail E2180. Sealed at the Intel factory, if it was otherwise, back it would have gone.

Just had a mail back from where I got it, they said to leave it on as it shows that its from them if i need to replace it??!! Surly a recipt will do that, but anyway it sounds like its ok.
Thanks for the help!

I would not be happy with that, i have this same issue in the past. If I purchase a brand new CPU, thats what I expect, seal on box broken = used for me. It may never have been used, but it's still not new. Many retailers open CPU boxes, test them for clocks & keep the best for ones for themselves.

I have to say I wouldn't be very happy if someone has opened a sealed box and stuck a sticker on the chip. Not sure its worth returning it but I definately wouldn't buy from there again...

A sticker on the chip thats a joke. that will ruin the cooling contact.

On the underside of the chip between the pins so it will not affect contact on the upperside where the IHS/cooler is.

I would be sending it back and asking for a refund or one that had not been opened and stickered personally. They just voided the intel warrenty by doing so surely.

the retailer picks up the warranty on your behalf in this case as my e8400 has this sticker on it and the cpu is 100% fine even shows the correct temps

Well thats a joke. Surely if you remove the sticker to use it will leave some residue.
