Sticking Sat Nav mount PERMANENTLY to dash...

Looking for something to permanently adhere those smooth mounting disc/plates you have for sat navs etc, to the top of my dashboard, so I don't have to mount it on the windscreen.

Has anyone used this stuff to stick stuff 'properly' to the soft spongy dashboards we have nowadays? The peel off one that came with the plate was rubbish - didn't stick at all - but tbh, I've yet to find anything that sticks solidly to these spongy-type dashboards!

Thx for any tips/advice

I bought a car that someone had araldited (or something) one into place a couple of years ago...found it handy as almost everyone has a mobile or SatNav nowadays...but nowhere to stick the holder other than the windscreen - I prefer them on top of the dash.

I'd do the same and just leave it for the next owner (it's black on a black dash so not an eyesore at all)

One came stuck on the dash with the car when I bought it, originally planned to take it off but started using it and loved it, best thing is it doesn't leave horrible circles on the glass.

I assumed they all came with adhesive already on the back?

This is exactly why I prefer it to be on the dash too ;)

It did...but as I say, it was totally useless for soft, textured dash on my Mondeo...it made a token gesture of sticking, but it needs to be a smooth surface to adhere properly with the one's that come the units, that's why I'm looking for some heavy-duty adhesive pads or tape such as the one in the link above.

Have you considered a Brodit mount? Love the Brodit Pro Clip mount for my iPhone and it looks like they do TomTom compatible ones. Essentially mounts somewhere screw free by fitting inbetween trim parts, their site will show the mounting locations for your car.

Bit different (it's not permanent) but I bought an OSOMount Space Mount. http://osomount.com/shop/dash-grip/ to use with my mobile phone but should also be suitable for a satnav. I'd got tired with a magnet based mount I was using as I could imagine things going flying around the car in the event of an accident.

It's a gel-like surrounded suction mount - sticks to any reasonably flat bit of a dashboard, even many textured ones. Since buying it I've used it regularly in my Honda Insight 2 and a Seat Leon hire car. Just needs an occasional clean with water to stay sticky and doesn't seem to leave any marking on the dash. Plenty of use now and never slipped once (when fitted properly).

On the adverts I saw prior to buying, they were demonstrating the suction pad being used to lift up a microwave oven.

All in all, I'd highly recommend it as an alternative to a permanently fixed mount - and it doesn't scream "I've got a satnav" when you're out of the car.

Curved surfaces are a different matter though. With a slight curve it can sometimes stick well enough to appear it's on (due to the sticky gel) and then fall off after a while because it's not sucking properly. You learn after doing it once.

the dashboards tend to have as non-stick material on, so even the toughest tapes will come off.

You should just buy a weighted dash mat, (dont get the flat ones, they can move about quite a bit if you hit the gas hard).

The OSOMount looks the mutts.....but....surely, almost every dash has a slight curve in the middle/top area where it will be needed??

I had one of those weighted mats once....but everything went flying off it when you braked or went around a corner a bit too sharply!!

It doesn't have to be perfectly flat - just nearly. There isn't really a flat spot on my car's dashboard. Doesn't take much of a curve to prevent it working though.

Watch out if you do decide to get one. There are a lot of very similar looking fakes (and genuine ones with a slightly different name) on ebay.

Edit: This is another osomount product but the dashboard shown on 52 seconds is fairly typical of what it should stick to.
