Still buying a 680

Is anyone still buying the 680? It seems stock levels are still low and the price is still high.

If there is little difference between them why spend £100 more.

I ask because my intention was to pick up one of these and then another when I had the money. Just wondering who is still going to buy a 680 and if so why?

the reference cooler on the 680 is actually pretty good... so if you compare some of the high prices of 670's with the lower end prices of 680's, there is not all that much in it and the 680 will OC to beyond where a 670 can... also some people will always want "the best" regardless of cost

look at the 580's over most of their life, they were arguably "over priced" compared to similar cards yet they held their price really well for a long time and people still bought them in droves

The twin forzr 680 is just in today and at a decent price compared to the other custom cooler models . Just picked up one have been waiting for ages to upgrade my 6970 , Would have prob gone for a 670 twin forzr III , but this came in first , and with the overclock should move ahead of the 670"s nicely , which prob in most cases need the overclock to catch up with the 680"s

I can see a portion of people still going for the 680, I think it is the best single GPU card out (just) and if £90 is no big deal for you.

Personally if I was buying now though it would be 670 or a non ref cooled 7970

Can I ask why?

Was thinking of getting one of these.....

Now that I run at 2560x1440 (thank you cheap but good 27" korean ips) I guess i need the extra Vram much more than the extra 5-10% performance especially when I SLI and pile on the exotic AA levels which will eat up Vram

With a BENQ monitor and then looking to pick another GPU in a month or so.

Or getting 2 x 670 reference ones now with the monitor. So cant decide its driving me nuts :(

if looks and an extra 50mhz (possibly) are important to you then get one like that... personally I would go for 2 reference ones at the best possible price you can find, noise wise, some users are reporting that the ref style ones can be noisy and others are saying not so it could be a faulty fan on the ones that are being picked out as noisy... particularly for SLI, having a cooling solution that dumps heat outside the case may be beneficial to you depending on what case and airflow setup you have, as would having a side fan that pulls air in directly over the 2 cards

edit; sorry I thought you'd linked to a 670... if you want a 680 I would go for reference ones as they are quiet - definitely wouldn't go for an aftermarket 680 as there is very little benefit

if buying 670's I would also go reference and get 2 if you've got the money (which is also what I plan on doing in the near future - 1600p monitor and 2 670's)

When I first started building my PC I was very happy with just 1x 680 then I decided to get a monitor and not use my TV.

Reading up on 120hz I decided that this is the way I wanted to go but have it in my head that 1 x 680 is not enough for 1080p 120hz.

I though ok now the 670 is out I can pick up 2 x 670 and a Benq monitor for just a little bit more than 1 x 680 and will guarantee me the FPS needed for 120Hz.

Soooo here I am. I have enough for 2 of the cheapest 670 and the monitor or a 680 with cash spare towards something else or another 680 down the line. – Although price has increased on the monitor :( can I have a deal OCUK???

I guess it comes down to will I notice any difference on a 120hz monitor with all details turned on 1080p with 1 x 680 or 2 x 670? or 1 x 670?

that is entirely down to you... I had a 120hz monitor and didn't notice it being "smoother" than when I was running at 60fps, but some people say they do

the only way you are going to find out is by trying it

a single 670 vs single 680 there is a fag paper between them, 670 SLI will absolutely beast a single 680

whether or not that translates in to a better experience for you running at 120fps / 120hz or not will be entirely subjective

I'm currently having the same dilemma regarding 3 screen or single 1600p
several people who have tried 3 screen have said they prefer 1600p so I think I'm going to try that first and maybe try to get hold of some cheap 2nd hand monitors to try 3 screen on a small scale to see which I prefer before spending too much on extra graphics cards etc.

The problem is there is no real way of trying it. Think I have spent to much time deciding when I should be getting rather than enjoying using it.

Does 120hz only benifit when at 120 fps

Me! i'm getting a second one in July. As for why? Well it's a 680 and still the fastest card on the planet.:D:D

I also will be getting a 2nd 680 but only when this one starts to stumble a little in games or I get another 2 screens.

I've had to settle for mid range cards most of my gaming life, voodoo 2 days onwards. This time I had enough spare cash for the 680 and despite the small difference over the 670 (I didn't know this at the time as I bought on day 1) I am still delighted and would still choose the 680 over the current offerings of 670's.
The reference cooler is just brilliant, I get 62 degs after hours of BF3 on ultra 1080p with a 60% fan profile with acceptable noise IMO. It will clock to 1280 stable and exhaust all the hot air out of the case and to top it off EVGA sends me a free high flow back plate!

I was nice to have a top spec card for the few weeks that it lasted before the 690 came out :)

I will buy a second one when I am feeling hard done by again... In a couple of years time.

I personally believe that the 680 is a bit of a rip off now that the 670 is on the market. I'd go for a 670 or a 7970 and save yourself money.
