Hey all,

This is the last piece of hardware I need to finalise my built.

I am going for quiet yet fast drive and have got my eyes on a few.

  • Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
  • Western Digital 1TB Caviar Blue
  • Western Digital RE3

However, the WD RE3 has just caught my eye and I don't really understand where it fits into WD series of Green, Blue, Black etc...

Does anyone know how well the WD RE3 performs and sounds?

Thanks for any help,

Evoss

The RE3 offers similar performance to the WD Black.

The RE3 is an enterprise class drive and you pay a premium for that.

Have a read of this and it will give you an idea of the differences.

The drives sold now are going to be different than the one in the review but you'll get the idea of what the RE3 is about.

Ok, after a little digging the RE3 is a server HDD, however if this runs quiet and fast, what is there to stop me using this?

I looked at the reviews for "Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB" on OcUK store and one comment stating that the F3 is louder then the WD RE3.

Have 2 of these on Raid 0(running win 7)-they are very fast but are louder than either F1 or WD RE3.

If it is similar to the Caviar Black, is it the same noise levels?

If the WD RE3 is fast and quiet I will get it, but is it quieter then the F3 and relatively fast?

No idea as I haven't got an RE3.

I do own 12 Samsung drives (8x1TB F3's and 4x2TB F4's) and they're all fast (for HDD's) and to me they're quiet.

There's really no point in listening to any opinions on the reliability of HDD's.

You'll always get the "my (insert HDD manufactrer here) drive died and they're a load of....."

Similarly you'll always get "I've owned nothing but drives made by (insert HDD manufactrer here) and never had a problem.

No one has ever produced any statistics in this forum to demonstrate that drives produced by any particular manufacturer are more reliable than another.

Take Davedree, for example. He's just posted that his Samsung HDD died so he's bound to be on a downer.

I could tell you that over the last few years I've owned about 20 Sansung drives without a problem (which is true) but it doesn't mean they're any more reliable than WD, Seagate or Hitatchi.

And that YouTube video is rubbish.

Any HDD in an external dock makes more noise than if it's properly secured.

I use Samsung and WD drives in an external dock and they both make more noise than the drives in my PC.

hang on a sec matey its well known that f3's have issues with their firmware (but so well known that i didn't know til it was too late)
in supporting h67-p67/z68 and amd 850.

also not 1 but 2 samsung failed in my experience,

The samsung was fine in my 710 amd, but the z68 killed it no question about it due to the firmware.

Im going to be running on a Z68.

If I dont go with the F3, what are my other options for a quiet, reliable and fast hard drive?

i agree on what surveyor said, (bar the fact there is an actual problem with f3's!!)
theres no answer they are all good just need to check that theres no issues with certain hdd's and chipsets.

an f3 is fine on sb, as long as it has the correct firmware.

Well, matey, it's not like WD didn't have problems either:

Critical Design Flaw Found in WD Caviar Green HDDs

All Samsung drives shipped in the last few months will have the new frimware so any past problem is irrelevant.

I suppose my alternative is to get a hard drive caddy (silencer) and mount it in a 5.25" bay...

Anyone else done this?

Yeah agree on the wd green news, have had experience in people using these in raids with mutiple failures.
Like i said I agree with your statement about various manufacturers vs reliability but stating i'm on a downer comes across a little patronising.

My samsung was fine and i miss the great read rates and the price i bought it for was ubeatable value, but if i had known that it would have killed it self on the z68 i would have flashed it prior to the click of death. Yes the recent f3 models should hopefully come with the fixed firmware, but still possible items in stock at suppliers are of the older type etc.

Anyway peace out
