I am STILL having all sorts of problems with my memory. My Mobo (P5n32-e sli plus) just does not want to work with the Kingston memory I bought (Im on the second lot so I'm pretty sure it is not duff modules. I got 4 gig of Kingston 8500 DDR2 which should be happy running at 5 5 5 15 settings (though I am running it completely bog standard with auto settings). It will not even boot with both sticks in. I get random BSODs with one in and sometimes it will not even boot or recognise it is there.
The only way I can get a reasonably reliable startup is by putting a single 1gig stick of OCZ flex xlc I have been using previously.
Is it likely my mobo or its memory slots a defunct?
Any possible fixes?

You have sort of already suggested what you need to do. Try one stick of your PC2-8500 at a time in different slots/bnaks.

If the one stick fails in all slots but another stick works, you have a faulty stick. If different sticks alwasy fail in the same slot, then you are looking at either a faulty mobo/memory controller.

Do you get any problems/BSODs with the OCZ flex memory in?

If yes, then consider faulty memory slots. If no, then likely it's just incompatible with the Kingston memory.

That's pretty much the case. I think I've tried pretty much every combination of stick(s) to slots with it either not even posting or registering it with two sticks in or loading to som extent before BSODing with one in. It does run reliably with the one stick of OCZ in slot B1 if memory serves. I am beginning to suspect the board but I don't understand why it is happy to work with the ocz and not the Kingston. It is the second pair of Kingston sticks I have tried so I doubt it is them at fault. I really REALLY don't want to have to replace the mobo as it is an extremely neatly built machine with all the cable runs tied up n tucked away. It'll be a huuuuge PITA to replace :(

If the OCZ works in one slot with no memtest errors, but has problems in the other slot, then it does sounds like your motherboard. Have you updated to the latest BIOS?

Ive been trying to do that but am having problems getting the bios to download from Asus. The updater program isn't worth a sook!
