I recently took a flight and had my Quest 3 with me. I have some films on the headset and was also able to connect to the airline entertainment app, more films, TV series, podcasts and games.I got chatting to the cabin crew and was a bit surprised when they said they'd never seen anyone use a headset during a flight. Non of the globetrotting cabin crew had even tried VR and were curious about what VR has to offer. Obviously, you can't demonstrate thrill of the fight or beatsaber in a plane galley, but transporting them to the home environment with the browser window running the entertainment app, wordlens and the VD auditorium with avatar 3D showing was pretty much all I could demonstrate. Having tried it, they asked the price of the.headset and seemed interested in getting one. It feels like VR is still very niche, as not many folks have tried it and there's little opportunity to try before you buy to see what it has to offer. YouTube videos showing how good VR is just don't cut it.

I know, it's the worst 'I'm on holiday' post ever.

Absolute filth.

Anyway, yeah, it is niche but not a niche niche like it used to be.

I picked up an Odyssey during lockdown purely to disappear into space in Elite. TBH I don't think I've picked it up since but don't regret it, it was great at the time.

I don't think it'll go proper mainstream until there's a headset that you can pop on like a pair of glasses that are relatively cheap.

Yep. I couldn't be arsed with all the faff when I had mine. Was fun at the time but not something I want to use at anytime. Couldn't think of anything worse than wearing one in public, constant fear of not knowing my surroundings.

The passthrough on the Quest 3 is pretty decent tbh. I was able to watch a movie and eat the sumptuous airline grub without sticking my finger in the lughole of the person sat next to me.

Deffo still a niche, agreed. I think it grew a lot from 2013 with the Oculus Rift DK1 up until the end of the covid pandemic restrictions and the Quest 2, then its growth has slowed right now. Like u i find non VR users are quite interested in it but they don't seem to wanna make the jump to buying a headset.

I wonder why that is? Nerdy image? Not comfortable looking enough? Price? I'm not sure. People think nothing of paying a lot more than a Quest 3 for a phone that is a marginal improvement on the phone they already have. Maybe VR headsets have an image problem? I don't know tbh.

Anyway, i love this hobby, and in 1 way its nice that its still small enough to get to know regulars on forums like these, discord, reddit, etc. I do hope it goes massive eventually of course.

Edit to say enjoy your hols OP weathers crap here in the UK!

Thanks Chris, it was a bit scorchio here today.

My son and I still get plenty of stares when in our headsets on the occasions we travelled, generally more in the terminals than on the plane. People get very put off when you wave at them after they've been staring for a while .

Whilst he'll often play anything he fancies, I'll stick with movies in passthrough or puzzling places etc, so I can see the surroundings, our bags etc. Never been questioned by the cabin crew, I think they knew what it was, they seemed happy enough to hand me my drink etc whilst on the flight.

I think when VR is combined with your hobby it overcomes many of barriers like price, faff & willingness to learn/tolerate the negatives. This is why imho VR is no longer niche in the segment of race and flight sims sure its not the dominant medium but I think its here to stay now and is growing slowly.

If you apply VR to the entertainment and gaming sector as a whole though, yes for sure its very niche. People have other options, interests and demands on their time and finances VR as it is right now is not a good fit for most people.
