My computer has still not downloaded Vista SP1. I am on 32bit Home Premium. Any idea why? Unfortunately I cant use Vista at the moment-thanks to Crucial's fantastic RAM I am currently down to 512mb, but when I do get back up and running how can I get hold of SP1? Is it worth it? Are there any risks attached?

Sorry about Vista pre-SP1 was bad. So many obvious issues with it.

OP, i'd just download the redist from the Microsoft site and install that.

SP1 made no difference for me, never had any problems and continue to not have any problems.

Windows Update wont show SP1 if it finds something that it things is not compatible with it. You could try just downloading it, but don't blame us if it doesn't work! Have a read through this before you install it manually.

Goto the update part in vista and install whatever it finds, I found that I had to update several times before sp1 showed up. But if you have already done that then try what the others say.

Cheers. I havent had any issues with Vista so far (touch wood), so may leave it until I get it automagically. Dont want to screw up my install!

Bad network and disk performance are a thing of the past with SP1.

People who say they didn't notice are talking out of their ***** TBH.

Those 2 were definate KNOWN issues and were NOT computer specific, everyone suffered this. Miles better with SP1 installed.

Wrong. Don't talk rubbish about things you clearly know nothing about. NOT everyone suffered from it. Myself included.

indeed. none of the windows updates/sp1 since release have made any major improvements for me. i guess i must be lucky - everything has worked just fine since day one. now of course i realise network/disk copy speeds have been a huge issue for many, many people. infact i think there are some whose problems haven't been fixed by sp1, rendering EvilFranky's post ever more useless than it already was. :p

Clearly know nothing about, ok.

Please don't be so arrogant to assume you know anything about what I do or do not know.

Nice attitude from behind your cosy, safe, distant computer hide away.

No, nothing major at all. Only things that were obviously improved that I noticed were network and disk performance.

Strange how every review/product test of pre and post SP1 Vista, comment on how greatly improved it was in this area.

Just because neither of you have used Vista to the extent where this has reared its ugly head and been an obvious problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

yes i used vista for 18 months and have never copied files over a network or from disk to disk....

i never tell people their vista experience should be exactly like mine. so why do you?

Sarcasm! Fantastic!

Fine I'll change my original statement and say that 95% of users experienced the problems I have commented about. That leaves 5% for users that feel Vista was bug free from day one.

Sarcasm...again! Great stuff!

For what it's worth I had huge issues with Vista pre-SP1 regarding file copy speeds and networking, so it's obviously not a non-existant problem.

There's no reason to use Vista without the first Service Pack, so you might as well try and get it to install.

Can you please explain why it is idiotic?

Well with your statement 'Just because neither of you have used Vista to the extent where this has reared its ugly head and been an obvious problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.'

He is stating that he has used Vista to the extent that you're saying and he didn't experience them so it blows your statement out of the water.

I wouldn't say 'idiotic' though.
