Still using 8800GT, any point to upgrade?

Hi, basically i been telling myself i should upgrade for ages now, but have forever put it off as i just dont see if theres any point in the upgrade.

Basically, Modern warfare runs excellent without shadows, but is a little sluggish with shadows on, same for borderlands, great except when shadows are on. Crisis i dont really care about. Bioshock 2 will be out soon, dunno how that will cope

So yeah, apart from being able to have shadows on without losing FPS or turning other stuff down, is there really any point in an upgrade? I know the 4890's are hot right now for bang/buck value, but people say to get the new 5xxx cards which are slower, more expensive but DX11, and then theres nvidia which i've totally lost the understanding of lately :p.

Other specs include Q6600, 4 gig ram, win7. What would you guys suggest? Worth money or a waste?

Oh forgot to mention, running on 22" 1680 by 1050 widescreen display, generally anti-alaising either off or 2x :)

EDIT: meant 4890 lol

I wouldn't bother moving from an 8800GT to a 4890 this late in the game... 8800GT are still great cards but games look so much nicer with max settings + shadows IMO so it might be worth looking at the 5770 or 5850.

Exactly what i was thinking. Plus my power supply is quite a few years old, cant remember wattage but its not the most powerful and i really like the lower power consumption of the new 5xxx cards and like you say pointless getting a new DX10 card to replace whats already a great but less powerful DX10 one :s

Definetly considering one of the cards you mention. Dont Nvidia do any DX11 cards yet? Not that im anti ATI or anything, had their cards before (and sorry but im not that up to date on graphics hardware these days as i used to be).

Thanks!

Can't blame you for wanting to stick with nVidia :D

Unfortunatly it doesn't look like nVidia have next gen DX11 cards out til atleast March earliest and even then its likely only their top end cards - leaving the mainstream cards til around June.

Un-fortunately Nvidia don't have any DX11 cards available for a few months, and probably allot longer if your budget is around £200.

I would deffo get a 5770, I game at the same res with a 5770 and maxes everything im playing at the minute nicely.

mw2
dirt2

nfs:s

I suppose it would depend on your motherboard, if you can crossifre id get a 5770. if not id get a 5850.

I just went from an 8800GT to a 4870 and tbh i cant really tell that much difference, although I can turn up the aa and af.

Yeah thats what im REALLY scared of doing. Dont wanna throw money down drain on an upgrade im not going to get too much benefit from. Its like upgrade from 2gig to 4gig = definate benefit. 17 inch CRT monitor to 22 inch LCD flat panel = definate upgrade.

Also, am i the only one here thinking that games look better with shadows turned off?

I only did it because it only cost me £32 to upgrade as i sold my 8800 and bought from members market.
