Hi all,
Playing BF3 yesterday and I got a temp warning that my I5 2500K cpu was running at 73 degrees. I didnt think this was a peoblem until I read that the recommended max temp should be 72.6 degrees ( thats if Im reading his rght, http://ark.intel.com/products/52210/Intel-Core-i5-2500K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz )

So I download prime95 and start running it to see what happens. I wimped out at 90 degrees....

Set the fan to run 100% speed and then ran Prime again, max temps reached was 75 degrees under 100% cpu load.

So, do I need a new cooler and if so what ould you guys recommend? Dont want to be spending too much because of Christmas but want to run at decent temps.

Never had a problem with a stock cooler before and this hs only jst started happening. Heatsink is secure and clean.

It looks likely that a better cpu cooler would not go amiss but before being sure with that statement and making any recommendation(s) a few ?'s :-

Are the temps you are getting with an overclock running ? (If so what are you running at?)

Volts going though the Cpu?

Motherboard ?

Case?

Case Cooling ? (good airflow through the case?)

Assuming that you are not overclocking , would you wish to do so and what amount of clock would you be looking for?

Lastly and probably most important, what's your budget?

Thanks for he replies.
Ok, some answers...
All stock speeds, no OC, volt core is 1.0 to 1.02 volts.
Mobo is an Asus P8Z68-V LX
Case is crappy old thing used just to get system up and running and is in a desk ( not ideal I know )
CPU idles around 41 degrees.

Budget, well, only want to do this once and with a fan and heatsink, no water cooling. Best bang for the buck as they say...As long as its quiet!

Pretty? pretty damn ugly! lol. ;)

there should be no way at all your chip is getting that hot unless the heatsink isnt mounted properly, or its oc'd, i would check your cooler

Or your case is getting hot causing everything else to get hot.

WTF??? i could run me chip without a cooler and it probably wouldnt get that hot, the case has nothing at all, 100% to do with it, why people are suggesting the case is the cause is beyond me, if its inside the desk then yeh, but otherwise no chance

it was more of a metaphorical statement, but unless he is oc'ing or his pc is inside a sealed desk, then at stock, the chip would go nowhere near 70

Would agree that 40c+ @ idle is very poor.

No/poor air throughput in your case will exacerbate any cooling problems you have (minimum I would suggest is a 120m sucking air in at front(bottomof case) with a 120m at the rear(top of case) sucking air out.)

CPU cooler may well not be seated correctly - check per core temp as well as 'overall'

If you would like a quieter, cooler cpu which you can clock somewhat then I would go
for

I have no personal experience but the reviews I've read do give it a big thumbs up.

Just check that it will fit your case/ram/board !!

Im running an MSI GTX 660 OC Twin Frozr graphics card.

Yes, in a desk with door shut...poor ventilation...eek.

Will take case out of desk, remove side panel and check temps again. Will try running Prime like that to see what temps it gets to.

Am I right in thinking 72.6 is max temp for this cpu and what do you guys generally run at idle / under load?

Set the fan to run 100% speed and then ran Prime again, max temps reached was 75 degrees under 100% cpu load.

75C under Prime95 is fine for an i5/i7.

I would check the BIOS for QFAN or stuff like that (fan throttling settings it's usually in hardware monitoring screen), the fan should spin up rather than letting your processor reach over 90C in Prime.

i tend not to have mine go over 70, mine is oc'd tho, yours shoudnt be going over say 50 (pure guesstimation) at stock temps, mine at idle with a standard cooler was about 40 at most

Humm... case is a box... inside of desk... another box??... One box... inside of another box... All boxed up and nowhere for heat to go.

That,
Sir kiel367
is what the case and cabinet have to do with it
nevermind.

I forgot to mention, the back of the desk 'box' is open but it just goes to show what airflow is required...
Moved base unit out of the desk and took side off to check for dust and to check the heatsink was seated well and secure. No dust and all secure. Left side off and powered her up and ran prime. This is what I noted.
vcore went to 1.328 max and varied a very small amount during test.
CPU temp max 64 degrees.
Motherboard was 25 degrees.
CPU frequency under 100% load was 4.33 Ghz
This was with fan running at 100%. CPU temp dropped back to 30 degrees within about 30 seconds of stopping test.

Will set back to auto and see what happens.
Looks like I need to re home the base unit or modify the desk a little...Good excuse for new case with some extra cooling fans to get some good airflow going.
