Hi,

I got a stone chip on the windscreen, not sure whether it is an MOT fail, what do people think?

Hard to actually see the chip in that photo, possible to take a close up/macro of it?

How large is it? size of a 5p? 1p? 10p?

Its not within the drivers view, and assuming its small enough, you may not fail, but without a better photo I wouldn't be able to make an educated guess.

Unfortunately I'm in Coventry whilst the car is in Loughborough. :( It's only like a 20-10p coin size.

Best pic I can get.

Yeah should be fine. Get it filled in and repaired for free at like tescos when they have those stalls and make sure it doesn't propagate.

No probs at all mate, as has been earlier said it is not in your field of vision and even if it was it would still pass.
I spoke to my mate who has an MOT centre about this a while back and he said he Never fails for chips. If they are bad he will give it an advisory but he would never fail it especially on the passengers side.

What is the deal with the people who do it for free anyway? What's in it for them?

Goddam, that's some serious magnification there! How did you cope with the curvature of the planet? What camera did you use, Jodrell Bank?

:p:D

My mates phone. :p Haven't got round to any proper pics. I been told once it's all clean etc someone at uni with a 9mp slr will take some good pics of it. Just need to find somewhere nice to take pics.

Well it's a win/win situation for all involved really.

If your windscreen was to actually go, as a fully comp insurance holder you'll probably only have to pay the excess or a nominal £50.
This puts the insurance company out of pocket as it costs more than this for your windscreen to be replaced.
So, they offer free repairs to the end customer - this should encourage them to get any chips repaired (because the majority of full windscreen replacements are due to chips becoming cracks etc).
The insurance company pays Autoglass, etc a small amount per a repair - or more likely a yearly amount of money to be associated with etc.

So:

Insurance company wins - because they don't need to pay for as many full windscreens at a loss
Repair company wins - as the repairs are charged to the insurance company
Driver wins - as they pay nothing to have their chips repaired.
