Stop calling "Current Gen" "Next Gen!"

its classed as next gen (360 ps3 etc) because its a new technology submitted to console games developers. note that it is only next gen in the console industry they arent including pc's as the hardware is already established but how it is used is what makes it next gen.

xbox 360 is changing how people use gaming consoles (I.E with iptv in their room and online gaming)

ps3 is using processing power to create more intense gaming (bad example would be warhawk but it has many many interactive objects on screen simultaneously)

wii for having a new style of control.

they are looking at improving these areas within the industry, as noted above the pc will always be at the forfront if you consider it as a gaming machine but personally I dont as its not dedicated.

gaming will get a lot more interesting but more than likely creating the games will cost too much to be productive (spokes person from havock told me that about a year ago)

Its just a term that struck when the 360/PS3 where being announced and the promises they made which have not really made a big leap in the generation.

Its just like saying it "the next generation of kids" etc.

I'ts ALWAYS been "next-gen", for about 10+ years! It's a common phrases term to describe ANY new or future electronic component.

Theres only one true next gen, and thats the ever evolving PC, high end PC users are always on the forefront of next generation technology .

No, that's more-money-than-sense-gen, where people spend more than the cost of a console on upgrades every 6 months just to play get a few extra FPS, whereas console games just enjoy actually playing the games ;)

If people use the term then it becomes part of language - that is how the English language evolves. Next Gen has been used for some time to describe this current round of consoles and it's used so people know what systems are being refered to. I think the term will naturally be dropped when the last generation of systems fall by the wayside. So when they stop releasing games and support for PS2, GC & Xbox then the PS3, Wii and 360 can be talked about without using any 'gen' reference as people will instantly know to what you refer.

So my suggestion to the OP - if you see someone using the term 'next gen' and you dont like it... tough sheet! I don't like to see 'Pwwnd' but it really doesn't bother me when I do ;)

I've been hearing this argument a lot lately, I started hearing it on last weeks HotSpot and now it's haunting me :p

I feel that while the PS2 is still selling well (and it is, as it still outsells the PS3) then we need a term to differentiate between the two 'sets' of consoles and 'next gen' works since we all know what it means. Does it matter that it's not an entirely accurate term? I bet you're a stickler for arguing semantics in a debate :)

Whats the next gen going to be called in a few years time? Next Next Gen?

A few years from now people will have become acustomed to the 360/ps3 and will start being called the current gen, and around the same time you'll start seeing photos, specs and rumours of the new 'next gen' of consoles.

As far as I remember, They are Next gen, because they are complete entertainment hubs, where as last gen were just consoles. What ever the reason, Who cares to be honest.
