I'm not quite sure what the correct terminology for this is but I'll try my best. Basically either using my D40x or my sony HDR-SR7 camcorder, I want to be able to set it up somewhere and then for it to take a picture every 30 seconds or so. Also to either set this to happen for a set length of time or for a set number of pictures.

I haven't found a way using either of these devices alone, so is there a piece of software I can use for this to happen ?

Im aware some of the Sony camcorders do have a time lapse function, my grandad uses it doing his wedding filming for the arriving of guests etc occasionally :)

What you need is an intervalometer, not sure if one is availble for your camera, you'd have to google it.

Canon provides this through the supplied PC software, but it means a wire to a laptop if you don't have a wireless link.

i'd bet it would be easier to take of of those glade air-freshener thingies that spray every xx minutes apart and attach the mechanism to a remote shutter release :)

Not too much help for Nikon users I know, but Canon make a Timer remote which enables this funcionality. It's the TC-80N3 and costs about £80 of the Bay. This remote fits Canon bodies with an N3 type connector, (40D but not 400D - which appears to have an E3 connector.)

Off to google a nikon equivelent....

....Can't find a remote release, but did find a chinese made (not nikon, but the adds say they are for various Nikon bodies) battery grip that seems to do what you ask. as everything in life nowadays, it's on the bay and costs around £50.
