Hi all,

Of recent times I am seeing a massive amount of speedtest.net results.... all of which are saying the same thing "my connection is rubbish" blame my ISP for such rubbish score's. How about lets blame speedtest for getting horsed by us all, especially at blatent times of night when loads of us are trying it. Its already been documented that the site has a lot to be desired. This thread for one to count a few http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17719210

There are plenty other benchmarks for testing your speed.... some are pretty simple....

Newsgroups especially your own ISP's if they have one.

Other speed test sites, they dont get hammered so much due to speedtest.net

Microsoft is a classic good site for DL'ing MS has massive amounts of bandwith.... Download XP SP2 for a comaprison 200 odd meg of goodness on a good spread bandwith site to measure.

FTP sites such as ftp.blueyonder.co.uk gamefiles sites offer excellent bandwith, try it for a download.

I dont contest that some areas at some points of the evening are throttled by sheers amount of people ratio....

But using one site to compare you bandwith is a bad idea...

Just my thoughts

Regards

Vic

I've always found it to be pretty accurate. In fact its better than pretty much any other speed test site and allows you to easily share your results, which is why most people use it.

It's generally best to use more than one test though, as it rules out a problem with the server. Some people seem to forget that and complain when a single test shows a slow speed. I think that is a bigger problem than Speedtest.net.

Well it isn't accurate so...?

What's not accurate about it? Almost every time I've used the site it's shown to be reasonably accurate especially when compared to other tests. The London server is a little crappy though I'll admit.

Downloading from an FTP is showing almost identical speeds.

As I said though, the main reason people use it over other speed tests is because it is easy to share the result.

Just run the above tests 1 at a time on NTL 10Mb connection shows how bad speedtest.net can be.

Don't use the London server.

Don’t normally use any of them was agreeing with the op but as you mentioned it had to try some of the other servers and yep they seem ok so what’s up with the London server why so slooow?

It doesn't show the right speed for me either, I can't get it over the 9 meg mark, most of the time it's between 4 and 6 meg.

And I always get 1.1 - 1.2MB/s ( minimum ) from sites when downloading.

Sorry about the image size, wanted to keep the clock in there so you could see the times of both tests

Well it's defo a fair bit off for me ever since I've gone to Sky BB from NTL.

Our local exchange has still yet to go ADSL2+ live so the line is running in "MAX" mode (up to 8MB) and I connect at 7-8MB.

The actual speed is the downloaded file speed (monitored via DUmeter)

Had cable installed yesterday :) tweaked the rwin and ran the speedtest and found i get really bad results on the London server but will max my connection using the Amsterdam server

Can I also state that having a single connection doesn't always max your connection. Using a download manager would completely max it out. :)

I only seem to get 200 kB/sec tops on my supposedly 8meg Nildram connection, how crap is that?

Wow, this is the first time I've ever got an accurate result from speedtest.net:

Normally I get a result of 4 or 5mbit when in reality I can download at 1200KB/sec no problems.

Edit: Ah yes, the London server strikes again ;) This is on the same connection only a minute or two later:
