Stopping rusting between sideskirts

Some of you may have seen my recent thread about welding and rust repairs...

Well I ripped the side spats off my car yesterday and the metal underneath had completed rusted through.

Just wondering, when I have new panels welded in, how will I stop this from happening in future?

Just treat the area with Hammerite rust paint or Waxoyl between the car and side skirt or is there another method? Drilling holes in the skirt to allow water to drain?

Cheers :)

Don't the professionals spray in cavity wax to fill up the gap and protect the metal?

Probably :)

But wouldn't some form of treatment have been done when the car was made?

I thought the reason why the sills have rusted away, is because of water that got trapped between the sill and skirt?

Doesnt look so much of a bargain now :p

Not really bothered about it tbh :)

I knew it needed some work when I bought it, and it's not something I'll get bored with in a year or so. I was quite contempt with the 214, and dropping a turbo lump in this one when the time comes will be a whole lot easier.

JRS, :D

Least you have a sense of humour about it. A mate of mine who owns a Rover stopped talking to me for a week after I pointed out that his sills were going :)

It may also have had something to do with me taking the mickey at every opportunity about it....

You want to attend one of the Manchester Meets.

Rovers and Head gasket failure are the most talked about things of the whole day.

People slating Rovers doesn't bother me though. In fact, I like to join in with the jokes. :D

I'm glad I bought a Rover (on my 3rd in fact) and won't let it get me down what other people say. Afterall, it's me who has to drive it.

in fact, at least 50% of our convo at the MM meet WAS rover bashing, it was great :D *remembers the dish of mayo and "Hey andy, doesn't this remind you of your engine cap?"* :D

Tom.

LMAO :D

I remember El saying something like "Have you eaten this before Andy"... pointing to Mayo. :(

Anyway... can anyone provide some help on this matter *cough*

Waxoyl the insides of any panel you easily can. Outsides will be need to be treated if its rusted, primer, something like hammerite and then seal it, I use clear gloss after some red paint

Dont rely on one thing, rust is very hard to stop.

Your car would have had some primer and undercoat sprayed on the insides but not usually done very well and around 10 years most cars need extra care.

Best thing is to spray waxoyl everywhere before the factory stuff wears out, not many do this unfortunately

If the rust is only surface scabs, blast it off with a grinder or suitable tool, then use some Zinc 182 primer (several coats onto clean bare metal). Wait for this to harden and then use hammerite or similiar. Again wait to dry. Then hammerite underseal with added waxoyl. If its under skirts the looks shouldnt matter.

Cheers for the replies guys.

Fulcrum, so basically, spray Waxoyl into every sill, wheelarch and underbody panel I get can to?

Liverpool-Lad, afraid the actual panels have rusted straight through. I stuck a screwdriver through one panel, pulled it out and it took half of the panel with it :(

I've waxoyl'd the entire open sills for now... until I can get them welded.

True but if the sills are ruste through not sure if I would want to drive it

The actual shell of the car isn't rusted. 30 seconds of me slamming a screwdriver into it, it wasn't going anywhere.

It's just the outside layer of metal that fell straight through.

If the actual shell was falling to bits I'd set it on fire myself. :)

cool just hard to tell what is rusty from your discription.

I am a child of technology so lack any imagination and require pictures :D

lol, well you can find a few pics in this thread :)

I'll take some more tomorrow of the sills.

On another note, I love your new car! Hope you get it soon :)

Well the good thing is if you just get new sills welded in pretty crudely (doesnt have to be the neatest job as the skirts are covering) then follow the advice Ive given above.
