ive been needing to build a external hard drive storage box or sumthing..

the obvious solution is a NAS, via gigabit network will be fast enough but this is expensive for anything more then 2 drives,

second option i have thought about is, cheap pc, really small + cram HDD in and hook it up to the network. however i would prefer 5.25 inch bays filled with removable hdd caddies.

the question is if there is anything i can buy to connect several hard drives to, and not need to build an entire pc and have something very small...

You could buy an esata card with a few external ports for external sata drives, them plus a few internals = plenty of space.

I haven't seen anything small that has good network xfer rates and space for multi Hdd's.

Still for around £140 you can assemble an AM2 X2 3600, Antec case with PSU 2GB DDR2 and a mATX mobo with Gbit lan and internal VGA.

Sure you need an OS but its far more versatile than a nas.... if you load it with XP you can remote destop in and use it for all you downloads and video file conversions, bit torrent etc etc.

I recently purchased a Synology CS407e (OcUK stock them), and 4x 750Gb disks to go in it. It's now set up in RAID5, which gives around 2Tb of redundant storage. A dedicated device saves a whole load of hassle, and is smaller than any non-custom other device.

i think what i was trying to get at, is if you get lets say antec 900, cut it off at 5 , 5.25 bays, and lets say 22cm depth, , fill it with 5 HDD's, some fans, and then have like sumthing out of the NAS boxes, instead of the whole mobo/cpu/ram thing. and what would this be called. (i want to build it custom, second choice is to build the smallest pc ever but mobo is quite big)
