Storage space running low

I keep getting this annoying message on my SGS2 every few days as my device memory keeps going below about 250 MB. But I can't see what's taking up the space all the time and what to delete to get much more memory back. USB storage however has over 5GB available.

Thanks for the link portmanfw. Will give it a go.

Orcvader, when it gives me the option for SD card, example, trying to move Google Earth, it always says 'Unable to move app. Not enough storage space'. I don't have any external card inserted, so how do I move apps to my built in usb storage instead?

Hold on, so you don't have an SD card, just using the internal memory (which android labels as /sdcard)? Are you using the stock Samsung firmware?

If your still using the Stock ROM the please for the love of God put SlimKat on it you will never look back! Not only will you increase the amount of room available to install apps but the device will become a completely new animal, so much quicker and smoother. Trust me, I convinced my wife to let me flash her 18 month old s2 and she loves it, 4.4.2 android is so much better than anything samsung could produce!

slim is awesome, especially with a nice, low lcd density ^^ not only more storage, but more screen :D

Orcvader, yep, I'm finding it a bit confusing. There's no SD card in my phone at all. I updated to android 4.1.2 months ago. Does that mean I'm not on stock samsung firmware or is that something different? Looking in application manager, there's only 16 apps that have found their way into the 'On SD Card' column, most of which I downloaded plus some default apps like iplayer, google play services, google play store and samsung push services. Going through the 'All' column, those are the only apps that give me the option to move to SD Card, but they're already on there anyway (well, internal memory presumably). For everything else, the 'move to SD Card' is greyed out.

Also, google earth shows only 4.39MB on SD Card. It says:

Storage
Total 44.18MB
Application 20.79MB
USB storage app 0.00B ?
Data 764KB
SD Card 4.39MB ?
Cache 18.24MB

So I can't move the rest of it, and it says nothing under USB storage, yet it says I have an SD card.

Bigboy, thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into this Slimkat then, sounds good!

postmanfw, about the microSD, yeah, that would solve a lot of problems. Which one do you recommend that would also be cheap? Can I assume that the 'Move to SD Card' option will become available for many more apps, given the confusing information above?

4.1.2 is the last update Samsung will be rolling out for the s2, the only way you will update any further is to go custom ROM.

The internal storage partition that holds your data and settings is called an sdcard as some phones hard wire an actual card within the device. Samsung however use chips of nand memory like an SSD to store information and partition it in to sections, on an s2 you will have /system /data /recovery /cache /preload and a few more.

The move to sdcard option Is only available when a physical sdcard is inserted.

Just to try clear some confusion, /sdcard is the internal memory partition for your personal files. /external is usually the actual external SD card. From the sounds of things it does sound like it's been partitioned in a way where there's not much space for apps. I don't remember it being like this howerer, my sister's S II is still on 4.0 ICS and it seems to share the space between apps and local storage.

Maybe it's time to flash a custom ROM?

My S2 was running out of memory despite having naff all applications on the phone. A temporary fix for me was to dial *#9900# and then press the clear log button. Not sure if it is a bug in the stock Samsung ROM but for whatever reason it is just filling up it's internal memory with logs.

My S2 has been doing the exact same thing lately. Looks like there is enough storage on the system partition but can't install/update any apps. Plenty of space on the 'sdcard' partition, but moving apps to that partition fails, due to insufficient space?

Anyway I got annoyed and questioned why I was even still running the stock OS.

Installed Neatrom 4.4.2 and haven't looked back.

Awesome! I'm so happy right now. I tried this when you first suggested it but it didn't work, kept getting 'USSD code running'... and then 'Connection problem or invalid MMI code'. That was using my installed exDialer app. Decided to try it just now using the default dialer and it worked! Didn't even have to dial the code, just typed it and this menu came up. Did the second option 'Delete Dumpstate/logcat' and instantly it deleted the logs and the damned low storage icon finally disappeared from the display. It was always odd why I had 1.97GB total internal storage, only 526MB of apps yet less than 200MB available. meaning 1.4GB of storage had somehow gone missing. Now I have 1.38GB of available storage. :)

Seems that a lot of people had the same issue

Personally I would flash a custom ROM anyway, I flashed slimkat on my sister's S2 and it feels like a brand new phone.
