Currently got a 120Gb SSD as Primary drive and a 1tb 7200rpm drive for storage. Problem I am encountering is after W7 with SP and updates with a few standard applications like MS Office, I dont have much space left over for games as these are taking up more and more space on HDD's for newer titles - averaging 10Gb a title as a min and thats before DLC & patches. I think BF3 was over 20Gb and that was before the last DLC with another one due out in March

Just wandering what setup's people have and if/how they split the installations for apps/games

Should I upgrade my SSD to something like 512Gb?

Buy another Mechanical drive for game installs only
or
Buy a large capacity Hybrid Drive to use as Primary for OS/Apps and the odd constant game like BF3. and keep the 120Gb SSD for Steam directory?

The amount to spend all kind of depends on how much this years bonus equates to which i'll get in March

I woul keep the ssd for your most regulary used data which is effectivly your OS. I use steam backup to move any games off the ssd im not ging to be playing for a while/at all but don't want the hassle of reinstalling when/if I do. EA's Origin I just leave on the hdd, thankfully I dont have too many of their origin only games anyway, but not for long I suspect.

The hybrid drives have always seemed like poor value to me for their cost, it's very little solid state cache that you get (and if your cycling hrough games theres going to be a lot of time where you'l be reduced to hdd speeds).
Which to pushes it's best application towards OS use but is inferior to the ssd and hdd, it's seems an expensive compromise that doesn't deliver well as a data drive.

Id personally go for either of your first 2 optoins, a bigger ssd or another mechanical drive. The latest hdd's are a fair bit speedier than those common from 2-3 years ago so a slight silver lining there, if ony just.

thanks for the response eddyr. I was uncertain of the hybrid drives and heard mixed things about them. Think i'll stay clear for now.

Found some gd prices on clearance stock for older model SSD's - just hope they are still available for purchase in a few weeks time when I've got the cash. As long as its new in box it'll make a great game drive.
