This problem doesnt happen all the time seems to be about 50% of the time, so its getting very ,very irritating.

When it goes wrong. from a cold start i press the on button.the case lights up. and system and case fans start to spin , but the graphics card goes into overdrive and the graphic card fan spins at !00%, makes a huge amount of noise.I can hear the HD ticking away as it loads windows but the Display stays black.Xp does boot and i can press enter on the keyboard and even type in my windows password, but the fans still running at 100% and the screens still blank.

I might have to reboot 3 or 4 times ( sometimes more )for the pc to boot up normally , i.e the Videocard doesnt run up to 100% fan and will display a screen image.

its a weird problem .I have tried lots of different things trying to sort it out to no avail , so im posting here in desperation really.

Any ideas ?

pretty much all the obvious things really . did not want to say too much as was hoping for some replies in case i had missed anything.

And while i have updated the bios i havent reset it via cmos jumper , so ill go try that .thank you for the idea :D

Not really much of an idea but most people do that anyway after flashing the bios to reset it to defaults.

You have made sure everything is connected fully too?
Reseated the cpu/memory/graphics e.t.c?

try this VGA in another PC if the same happens
and put different VGA to the current PC
in this way you can better isolate the root of problem

This sounds like the board aint posting. All my fans go to 100% on cold boot until the board POSTs and then the profiles kick in, could be a sign of the mobo failing?

I've had something very similar to this and I never really got to the bottom of it either. It's certainly a strange one but I'd say it's definitely graphics related.

Is the graphics card seated correctly? Reset the CMOS and re-seat the graphics card, try not to knock the card, even a little, when it's fitted.

When it boots successfully do the fans slow down as normal again, do you know straight away that it's going to boot properly judging on what the fans do?

On mine, I noticed that when I knocked the monitor cable at the back, or slightly knocked the graphics card inside, it would fail to boot on the next cold start, as if the card just budges a little, making it not sit right.

thanks for all the replies.

Looks like i have got it sorted.

I definately had not reset the cmos after i last flashed the bios.At least i cannt recall doing it.Should have known better really, been building PCs boxs since 1993.

Anyway ,in order to get access to the cmos jumpers i had to remove the video card as its a Matx mob/case. Its now booting up properly .So the Cmos reset or the re-seating of the video card solved the problem. However i had already re-seated the video card before so i think probably it was the cmos reset.

thanks again for all the replies.
