Strange Clicking Noise

At the start of January I built myself a nice new rig from OC, including a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 200GB 6V200E0 hard disk.

Shrortly after getting the rig up and running the drive made a very strange noise. It thrashes heavily for 2-3 seconds and then makes 2 or 3 weird clicking noises. This only happens once in a while, but has alarmed me none the less.

I downloaded a bootable CD from Seagate's website to test the hard disk, and I've run ALL of the tests that I can do (including a sector scan which took several hours) which all says the drive is in top-notch condition.

Can anyone convince me there's nothing to worry about, or should I be raising an RMA? :(

The first thing i would do is check that it's not just the drive causing the case to vibrate. To do this, take the drive out of the case and place it on something like a towel or similar. Make sure that it's level so as not to damage it and then turn on the pc. If the noises continue to happen then it's a problem with the drive itself.

If it continues then i would look at sorting out an RMA.

When I saw the thread title, straight away I thought a Maxtor drive and yours is.

Has happened twice on me. Both IDE drives, unfortunatly they were out of warranty.

I kept them for a month or so after making the noise. Switched on once and nothing, just died.

Did the same on both drives, thought it was mobo or another hardware conflict or something that had corrupted it but both drives failed in different rigs.

Has it made the clicking noise more than one time? Mine made it about every 2 hours.

I would RMA them before they go on you.

I had loads of problems with Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 drives on my nforce4 mb.

Did some RMA action, but in the end I replace it with a hitachi and all was fine.

Shortly after I bought a external HD enclosure and stuck the maxtor in it. It's been good as gold since then. Been using it like that for well over a year no with zero troubles.
