Strange connection issues VM Superhub + Dlink

Hi guys.

I've been on the Virgin Media 30Mb package since october last year and have been experiencing some pretty wierd problems.

Firstly, their Superhub that they give you was just awful. It had barely enough range to punch through to the next room and it never seemed to deliver a constant speed. The connection would fluctuate between slow and just about useable all day - regardless of peak times etc.

I then decided to connect up an old DLink DIR 635 to it and use the Superhub in modem mode. This seemed to solve the problem. The connection was much, much faster and seemed to be more reliable. There were times, however that the connection would cut out altogether and sometimes, the internet would disconnect, but the network would still be visible in Windows etc. but you couldn't connect. This has been happening more recently.

Even stranger, sometimes you can connect to it on one device such as a phone but not on a PC. Usually, turning both the routers off, then the Superhub back on untill it's fully on and THEN turning the Dlink back on fixes it. Sometimes, however, you have to do this multiple times to get it to work. This is less than ideal...

I've been playing with settings on the Dlink for a while and have found that it sometimes picks very high wireless channels when it is set to auto channel scan. Turning off dual band and setting the channel manually to an empty channel (using inSSIDer) seems to help things connect easier. I've also experimented with the various modes (b/g/n/mixed) but I don't know enough about this sort of thing to tell if they are making a difference.

Still, the strange connection cutoffs are happening daily and I don't think it's the Virgin connection. The issues we had with the Superhub, however, have made me think that it might be faulty. I've phoned them several times but just get the usual waffle. They do tend to give you money off the bill every time you complain, though!

All the firmware on both routers is up to date and it's using WPA2 - Personal at the moment. There are 5 people in the house but nobody's ever in, let alone online at once so I don't think the issues are down to overuse.

So, any thoughts as to what might be the cause? Or what I could do to improve the connection? I realise I'm being super vague about what's happening but it's so wierd, it's difficult to explain! I'm at the end of what I know and I've tried everything I could think of. I'd be happy to provide any more information you need.

I thank you first, for reading this massive wall of text, and secondly for any suggestions you might have!

Thanks,

You could try leaving the Superhub in router mode running the DHCP server and switch off wireless.

Then test for a week using just a wired connection. If that solves your issues, it's a wireless issue, so you could buy a new WAP and keep the Superhub routing.

If that doesn't solve it, then it could be the Superhub.

Basically eliminate all possibilities.

I used to use a d-link and always found channel 6 or 9 to be the best and wpa2+aes for best speed.
Maybe its a router firewall problem.

Download InSSIDer and run it on a machine with a wireless card. It will show you what other wireless channels are broadcasting and give you an idea of how your router sits amongst them channel and strength wise.
You can then adjust your channel to one where you stand a better chance.

Mine is the asus on the below screener, you can see that channel one and six are a little popular round here and if I didn't have a decent router the channel I'm on would be a problem.

Hi guys,

I've been using InSSIDer for a while to check the channels. When set to auto, the Dlink tends to pick very high channels which seems to lead to more random "Cannot connect" issues.

When I set it to an empty channel manually, this happens less but the network still disappears several times a day. It's very odd...

Bit of an update.

After endless testing of every possible permutation of security mode, channel settings and anything else I could think of, I disconnected the Dlink. When it was working, it was fine, but the cut-outs were just killing me.

Now just running the Superhub as normal and the situation is slightly better. The connection no longer cuts out completely but I've been experiencing some further wierdness. The connection seems to cut off but not disconnect for about 20-30 seconds every 10 minutes or so. The network stays active in Windows etc. but doesn't seem to be sending any data. Some sites also seem to be much slower than others to load.

In between cutouts, speed and pingtests are excellent, Pingtest reports no packet loss. Again, I've tried many combinations of connection speeds, channels and settings in the (frankly useless) Superhub advanced settings but to no effect. I've also completely disabled the Firewall on the router and IP Flood (something or other) which I see mentioned occasionally.

One thing I have noticed is that the "Speed" reported by Windows in network status (set to 144Mbps on the Superhub) fluctuates occasionally. Is this supposed to happen?

I don't know enough about the various settings to know if the sort of things I'm doing are helping or not so any advice is welcomed.

Thanks very much,
