The gf's car runs like a dog :(

It's got no power on top revs so going up the slightest hill makes you drop a gear.

I've had the plugs out and they are quite sooty. And about 2 months ago i changed the water pump and timing belt.

Is it possible I've got the timing belt 1 notch out? the engine should be electronically timed on the dist side but I've played with it and the car runs much better if i move the distributor cap anti clockwise about 10 degrees (guess) the top end revs are back but it pinks like a ######.

I'm wondering if I've got the cam pulley miss alined from the belt change? its the only thing i can think of.

it's the 1.4l 8 valve single point engine.

Any ideas?

If you had misaligned the belt when rebuilding it, it would've shown up sooner than 2 months later.

My bet is on a worn ign component, so leads, coil & sparkies
