Strange crashing issue

I have a strange crashing issue and wonder if anyone has seen anything similar. Spec is in sig.
What happens first is the Windows clock freezes. Then at some point over the next hour or so, apps will start to become unresponsive but in unusual ways - for example, Firefox will be playing iPlayer or Youtube without issue, but then the video stops. At this point I can open a new tab, type a URL in etc, but it won't load any pages. So it's not frozen, but doesn't work properly either.
I can click on the Start menu and it'll open, but not open any apps. I can choose to shut down, which is a coin toss as to whether it reboots normally or freezes and needs a hard reset.
There are no errors or crash dumps in the log.
I've ran Memtest and Prime95 and they were OK, though I haven't done Memtest for more than a day.
I don't run any bloatware, though doubt that would be able to cause this specific issue anyway.

The hardware, outside of GFX, is 10-12 years old so it is probably time to can it and enter the current decade lol, but it'd be good to figure out the issue for curiosity's sake if nothing else.

Could it be that a process that starts hogging resources and eventually the pc is unresponsive, open task manager and monitor what's going on.

Unfortunately not, task manager will open and show minimal resource use, before hanging in the same way. I have a stable set of apps I use and I've also tested shutting down all these apps (Steam, disk utility etc) and it doesn't prevent the issue, so I don't think it's app related.
I should add the issue is very sporadic and the PC can be on all day/overnight without issue, other time it can happen within hours of booting.

Mite sound odd but change the bios battery on the motherboard, it can cause some strange behaviour if old.
