strange laptop problem ???

hi guy's my friend has a laptop that has a strange problem, as soon so it boots to windows there is a very high pitch screech sound coming from the speakers, i haven't had chance to have a look yet as they live miles away

the sound go's on mute as it should but as soon as the volume is increased it starts again, i told them to check system property's and there is nothing out of place there and have also asked them to reinstall the drivers but they haven't got any disk's for it

is there anything i can get them to try as it could be a couple of weeks till i see them again and there daughter needs her laptop for homework and iplayer

could be feedback loop, does the laptop have a built-in microphone too? If so, try muting that in the mixer applet in windows.

sorry for not getting back to you, sound's like it coud be doh should have guessed that but still waiting for conformation for my mate but his away at the mo so will have to wait for him to get back
