Strange Overclocking Problem, Help Please.

Morning all, i'll start off with the system spec.

E6750 (GO stepping)
Freezer Pro 7
MSI P6n-SLI V2 (bios v1.4)
4gb Corsair ddr2 pc6400 xms2 (2t)
VTX ATI 5850 1gb
Windows Vista 64
500gb seagate 7200 hdd
Aopen dvdrw drive
650w antec true
generic firewire card
generic wireless network card
Antec 900 case

This is my dad's system which had a mild overclock of 3ghz stable for 3 months by just upping the fsb, this was on the retail stock cooler with an evga 8800gt and a generic 420w psu.

A friend of his had a play a month ago and got 3.4ghz out of it by just upping the fsb, taking the core volts up one notch and running the memory at 2.1v and this had been stable through various bad company 2 sessions but i don't know about prime as i wasn't there myself to test.

Anyway i upgraded his system with the freezer pro, 5850 and the antec 650w psu switched the machine on and got not post so at this point i loaded optimized defaults and booted to desktop.

This is where the problems start, i went back into bios and upped the fsb only back to 3ghz and the computer wouldn't post so since then i have been through all the overclocking guides i could find to tweak the bios and even flashed the bios from v1.2 to the latest v1.4 but the best i have been able to reach is 2.85ghz prime stable.

Has anyone had this problem before or have any ideas what i might try next? I have checked the usual suspects like disabling C1E and CPUID limit, could it be the psu maybe? I'm stumped :confused:

Edit: I forgot to say it's not a heat issue for the cpu as pre freezer 7 it was hitting 65 at 3.4ghz running prime and now it's around 40, however this is only at 2.85ghz now.

It's possible that the new PSU is not all it's cracked up to be, it should have posted right away with the old settings if all that was changed was the PSU and GFX card.
 
Thanks for the replies, I'll try the pci-e at 101 but I did think it could be a psu problem.

It's an brand new antec tpu 650 but it could still be faulty.
 
Make sure the memory speed and timings are ok - I set mine to 1:1 and with loose timings till the cpu o/c is stable.
 
Well still no joy so far, the furthest I have got is the windows logo just before the desktop loads and the system hangs. Anytime I try to up any voltages it just boots past post then hangs.

Next step is to put the 8800gt and old psu back in and try again, if it clocks to 3ghz stable I guess the psu is going back.

I'll report back in a bit.
 
I've just refitted the 8800gt and old psu, reset bios to fail-safe defaults and changed nothing but fsb to 1500 (375*4) and booted straight into windows at 3ghz.

Would not fully getting rid of the nvidia drivers when installing an ati card cause this?
 
Well it locked up at 3ghz before I could run prime so I guess we will have to settle for 2.85ghz is it's new limit.

Hang on - am I missing something?
375x4=1500 and booted in at 3.00 Ghz?

What multiplier are you using and what are you using to check your cpu speed?

375x8=3000 = 3.00 Ghz

I may be wrong but I've got a hunch what your problem is
 
Yeah on his board you input 1500 in fsb using an 8 multiplier (1500 / 4 = 375 * 8 = 3000)

3ghz is shown in bios and in cpu-z, i'm i missing something obvious? it wouldn't be the first time :D

You are right and using cpu-z (not windows info) you could try 9 or 9.5 multiplier although I suspect 8 would go further than 3.00Ghz anyway.

Ah cool it's been a while since i did any overclocking so wasn't sure, AMD XP2500 to XP3200 was my last dip in the water :)

I'm stuck with 6, 7 or 8 multipliers with this cpu and i think there is an fsb hole with this board between 1590 and 1700, it's a damn shame i can't get it back to 3ghz but it's not worth him upgrading this platform anymore when he might be upgrading to i5 in the next 6 months.

I'm half tempted to give him my E8400 as it's a bit wasted in my media/games machine lol.
