Strange Overclocking Problem.

I have just overclocked my G0 Q6600 to 3.2Ghz. With the multiplier at x8 and thr FBS at 400 Mhz. That means my CPU is running at 3.2Ghz (But I'm guessing you already figured that out).

The problem is though. Whever I run any CPU Speed test it tells me that my CPU is running at 3.2 Ghz. Also, my temps seems to be higher than when I set it to 3.2 earlier this week.

Anyone know why I'm getting this problem? And if, indeed, it is a problem.
 
I dont really understand your first point? you have Oced your CPU to 3.2ghz and your not sure why cpe tests show its clocked to 3.2Ghz?

As for temps is the room warmer? Have you increased the voltage?
 
What are your temps and what software are you using.
Sorry what do you mean on your second line regards speed test it tells you your running at 3.2 or do you mean 3.6ghz, some software programmes report default multiplier.
 
Yeh, sorry, I mean it is showing me that it is 3.6, instead of what it actually is, 3.2. What a typo lol

Im using cputest and cpu speed professional. Both say 3.6.

And I'm using core temp and speedfan for temps. It just makes me wonder why it's running hotter. It used to be 30 degrees at idle and 60 at 100% usage (prime95). Now though, all temps are 5 degrees hotter.
 
check with CPUZ see any difference. Return to BIOS check your multiplier. How long your prime95 running? 5*C hotter ist more like your room temp gone up...winter here...
 
CPUZ is saying that my multiplier is at x6, and my cpu speed is 2.1Ghz (I raised the multiplier to x9 and the fbs to 356). And the temperature is still the same.

The house doesn't seem overly warm, I'll check in the morning though. When it will be colder

I ran prime95 for around 3 hours.

turn off c1e(speedstep) in your BIOS, it's intel's way of saving energy when your not using your cpu, the multi gets lowered to x6 rather than x8.

what cooler are you using?
 
I'm using an arctic cooller 7. It is a good cooler, just not as efficient as it was yesterday, or something is running hotter.

Also, C1E is off, there are lots of options like that and I just turned them off. Still the same in CPUZ. I'm installing another operating system so I can check it then.

OK, I changed my over clock to x9 multiplier and 356 FBS, everything is reporting at 3.2Ghz, except CPUZ which is still going with x6.

I also overclocked my ram to something like 870 Mhz. My idle temps are still around 34, but the max temperature is not only around 55 degrees :-S

Weird or what?
 
You probably still have speedstep on which is dropping the multi to *6 at idle to save power nothing to worry about as long as the system is stable.

As stated previous the other programes for measuring CPU speed are assumming that you are using the default multiplier of *9

As for your temps then unless its more than a couple of degrees difference I wouldnt worry more than likely ambient

Temperature wise you are fine to go as high as 75c under prime95 small ffts load
 
Maybe one of those annoying BIOSes that ignores everything you tell it. My 780i keeps stuffing my multi back to 6* too - and I know I've got Speedstep off :/

p.s. - Front Bide Sus?
 
I dont think so, the programs are now reporting a speed of 3.2Ghz, apart from CPUZ which hasnt changed. The front side bus is currently running at about 356 Mhz

EDIT: Speedstep must be on. I just started prime95 and the multiplier jumped up to x9. Will this have any negative effects? Like a slower pc, or will it always jump back to x9 when the pc isnt idle.

have you got a advanced chipset setting in bios? when i am in this area i press f4 and it shows a hidden setting to switch off!

Ive noticed this...

I changed my multiplyer from default and a few smaller applications read it wrong :(

It's nothing to worry about, some software including Windows report the speed of the CPU using the default multiplier which would be 9 but use the current set FSB, so if you've set the BIOS to 8 x 400 it will report 9 x 400 or whatever the FSB is.

Also whilst setting and testing the OC I disable speedstep but after confirming stability I re-enable it so the CPU speed at idle will be lower but it will ramp it up as you put load on the CPU, again personally I wouldn't worry about it.
