strange problem, black screen.

Ok yesterday I was playing a game, when all of a sudden my screen went black, I could still hear the game sounds and everything, so I thought it was a simple crash.

I restarted my system where the screen stayed black, I couldnt see any of the white text with the black background but could hear the windows starting sounds.

So I tried another monitor, this time I could see the white text with black background but once I see the windows logo the screen went black again.

So the thing thats bothering me is this, is it my monitor, my cable or my GPU?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you another cable you can try? you can pick them up cheap enough.

But most likely sounds like your GPU - also check all the cabling on the GPU and that it is seated correctly.

If you have not already, just try turning the machine off and unplugging the power cable for a few mins and try booting again.

Ok I have now tried, different cables, different monitors and different graphics cards in different slots and I am still getting the black screen?

Things that I have noticed, for some reason I cant see anything on my normal monitor its simply black but on my old ****ty monitor I can see the white text displaying my CPU but sometimes it doesnt go beyond the CPU it simply goes to the next page which is displayed for half a second, then the windows vista loading bar appears, but once the Blue vista icon appears on screen about 1-2 seconds later the screen goes black.

The really strange thing is that if I switch the standby button on the front of my monitor off and back on again I can see the windows login where I can enter my password, but this screen looks like its flickering and low in contrast and then goes black again?

So what is the problem if not the cable, monitor or my GPU?

Any help is really appreciated.

Do you get output while booting, i.e. can you see the BIOS post sequence and the windows boot sequence? If so then try booting into safe mode and re-install the graphics and monitor drivers (or even just uninstall them).

OK when I switched my PC on to today I get a weird noise when I switch it on, the motherboard make a sound and the screen is still black, I can no longer see the BIOS or the windows boot sequence.

Ive tried 2 monitors, 2 GPUS, 4 cables, removed all memory except one and tried each one in all 4 ports and still no solution.

So does anyone think this may be a Motherboard or PSU issue?
