Basically I have a new i5 build and installing anything takes an age. Even the smallest of porgrammes. I hit install and it just sits there doing nothing for ages. I never had this on my old build and I'm depserate for a few suggestions?

eg running first time set up on a game downloaded form steam is now 5+ minutes.

Is this a clean install of Windows on the new build? If so then I would probably grab the relevant diagnostic program for your HDD and run it.

Alright mate, yeah clean install.

Stumbled across the solution. HD mode was set to ACHI and then I noticed the Marvbell Sata 3 operation mode was enabled and also set to achi. Disabled it and voila. Everything installs as it should and my boot times are a bit quicker!

On a side note, should I hvae HDD SMART reporting on or off in bios?

The only problem now is that my cd rw dirve is no longer detcted by the system.

Keep SMART reporting turned on as that will alert you of any problems with your HDD over time. Have you tried the CD-RW drive on another SATA port? Perhaps even use a different SATA controller which usually means a different coloured SATA port.

It seems the oboard controller looks after the four sata 2 ports and first 2 sata 3 ports and the marvel one looks after the 2 additional sata ports. If I enable the marvell controlelr it takes ages(hours) to install anything at all on the system. Even the smallest of programmes. And no I cant see my cd rom, presumable because I disabled the marvell controller.

Well it looks like moving all the drives onto the onboard sata sockets and not using the two marvel ones cured this. Really odd though.
