Hi guys,

I have a 2002 1.6 206 GLX and I'm having a problem with my lights. Started a few weeks ago driving down a dark country lane with my high beams on, driving along and then the high beams dropped to dipped beam. Tried putting them back on and they would only flash. Pulled over and turned lights and ignition off, then started car again and the lights were working properly again for around half a mile when the lights dropped back to dipped again.

A few days later we had some heavy fog so had my fog lights on and had a similar problem, driving along and then the fogs went off.

Was told by a friend that it could be the auto-headlights, so I tried disabling them, but they wouldn't disable. Went out for a drive and tried my full beam again and the came on, so I pulled over and tried disabling the auto-headlights again and they disabled :) however even though I have them disabled they still come on automatically, then turn off again around 2-3 minutes later.

Somebody else also said the try resetting the BSI which I have done to no avail.

This has me completely stumped

Thanks in advance

thought as much, well looking on ebay BSI, ECU and fob sets seem to be aroun d the £100-150 mark. How easy a job is it to do myself or would it be better to get an auto-electrician to do it?

Whoa there, hang on. This is a common problem on 406s and is not the BSI! It's just the auto lights sensor (yes, even though you've disabled it).

You need it permanently deactivated, which can be done with PP2000, dealer level diagnostic kit. Lots of people have these, including myself.

Not absolutely guaranteed to be the fault, but I'd certainly try it first since it's much cheaper than replacing the BSI. I'd put money on it fixing everything.

I'm in Leatherhead - want to come over for a diagnostic session and we'll disable the auto lights feature?

Alternatively, replace the auto lights sensor. They're a known failure point on 406s - pretty much every car gets to about 100k and then it dies.

So a second hand one might not be a good idea, see how much a new one is from Pug?

This could also be a fault on the stalk unit which I think they call the COM2000 unit.

I had a similar problem with the lights on a Xsara - but it was only a few months old and fixed under warranty.

Hi just to update this, have just replaced the Comm2000 unit which has solved the problem. Discovered when I found I could use main beams when signalling left
