Strange problem....

A friend has this problem with his graphics card, I'll quote what he said:

" I bought a Geforce 6800 ultra recently to replace my 6600, both are on pci-e. However, when I plug in the 6800 ultra to my mobo, an nforce4 a939 v1.0, the computer turns on but there is no output on the screen. The computer does one long beep and two short beeps, however the card is perfectly fine as it's been tested on another system, and the mobo accepts my 6600... I have a 350w psu, what I need to know is, if I upgraded this, would I stop getting a blank screen? I thought symptoms of an underpowered graphics card would be artifacts, but could someone point me in the right direction?"

Things he said he has tried:

"- Reset the CMOS
- Update the BIOS
- Reseat the graphics card
- Update the nvidia drivers (which shouldn't be the problem as the 6600 works absolutely fine)
- Check the psu (it's 350w, which according to many sources is the minimum required to run the card and therefore the screen should display something)
- Reseat the ram in different slots
- Move around the power adapters
- Unplug the cd and floppy drives"

Any help appreciated, cheers.

Remove extra devices (lighten the load) and see if it boots..

350W is a minimum, but i'd be inclined to think 350W good quality PSU (if not the case).

Only real way to know would be testing it in the system of a friend with a bigger PSU.

My money is on the 350W PSU not delivering enough juice. He did remember to connect the extra power cable to the card right?

The 6800 Ultra just eats power.

" ac input - 230v 5A 50mhz
dc output - yellow/black - +12v2 - 15A (graphics card gets power from this)
Yellow - +12v1 - 10A
Blue - -12V - 0.8A
Purple - +5V SB - 3A

That's all the information it gives on the sticker"
