Strange problem

I seem to be having nothing but problems with this rig lately..but this one has confused me fully

My rig specs are in my sig, except its not at those clocks, my cpu is at 2.8 while ram at 800mhz.

What happens is that the pc seems to shut off randomly when it pleases...sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes 5hrs...most of the time before windows loads

I have tried different gpu, both sticks of ram on their own (One worked first time, straight in no problems...other didnt... now using both sticks and have been on a few mins no problems... weird!)

Tried no hdd, no dvdrw drive..

A freind suggested power supply could be at fault, as it is doing it at totaly random times, i think if it were something like CPU or ram it would go off at a certain time (maybe when windows started properly using the ram? :confused:

)

POST is fine, one beep, Orthos is fine for a while (not done a very long test, not had the time)

Memtest returns no errors... 3dmark runs fine when the pc is working.. games are fine...im totally stumped!

Anyone here had this problem, or got any idea how to fix it or whats causing it?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I think your friend may be right, does certainly sound like it could be to do with your psu, got another one to try?

i think my friend has a spare, i will ask him if i can borrow it to test with.. I hope it is... is there any chance it could be cpu/motherboard? Temps are all fine by the way, no heat problems (As its doing it from cold too...)

It doesnt really sound like a board/cpu problem, but the danger is always there. Just test the psu first and go from there.

Okay well i bought the PSU from a shop a while back, so ill take my rig into the shop tomorrow and see if they can do anything with it.. Ive stressed it with Orthos blend for 30 mins now, no restarts... at 50c

After an hour of orthos blend with no problems.. and an hour of problem-free gaming, i come on firefox to check for replys and after 2 mins..it goes off..

Anyone else think its pointing towards psu? Want to make sure before i buy a new one as im rather skint!

okay i really need help now...

I took my psu out of my pc, and placed it in an older machine in the other room after spending a while trying to get on my pc, with it just switching off before even posting in some cases... and in others it got up to windows loading screen before restarting.

When i placed the PSU in this PC i am on now.. it turned on, no problems, first time..

What could this mean? The spec i am on is much lower than my rig (old SC AMD, int graphics etc)

The PSU is 650w, Atrix... has powered my rig for about 4-6months problem free untill now..

Could it be the mainboard or anything else? Please help ASAP!!
