Strange problem...

Hi, (sorry this is a bit long winded, it was hard to explain)

I had a problem with my old PC just before I upgraded it. About a week before I got all my new stuff the internet just stopped working. I tried to access the page for the modem (I have to type in 192.168.1.1 in web browser, then it should bring up the options), but that wouldn't work, just kept giving like an error 404 type thing. So I restarted and it posts ok but then when it got to loading windows it just slowed right down, and then showed my background but none of the icons loaded or the task bar or anything. For a couple of days I thought it was broken, but then one time I left it for like 15 minutes and it finally loaded windows. I tried to sort the internet again with no luck, in fact I also found that windows firewall wasn't working (it gave some error about not being able to load ICS or something). I tried unplugging/disabling the ethernet, etc, to no avail. I then backed up my things and formatted and then it worked fine. I have since bought all new parts off OcUK and put them in (the only things I didn't change was the PSU, DVD drive and Sound card) and it has worked fine for about a week. But just now it happened again, internet stopped working, couldn't access the modem menu and then restarted and it took 10 minutes to load up again. Tried a system restore to earlier today and it started working again. Then 5 minutes later the internet stopped working and I restored again and it's working now. So I decided to post on here before it happens again.

I don't see what it could be other than my modem doing something strange to my ethernet?

Any ideas?
Thanks

well... seems like I have a lot of things to try..

Admiral Huddy - err.. NIC? :p I know quite a lot about PC's so you don't have to go into too much detail, but this area isn't my expertise at all. Could you explain what NICs and IRQs are? and DNS settings? sounds so familiar.

little_crow - I replaced my hard drive with the upgrade too so it is a completely fresh install of windows.. however, my windows was being a bit fishy during install, first couple of times i booted from the disc to format and install the first time, it failed a couple of times before it got to the formatting window.. can't remember what it said, something about a corrupt something.exe. Could it be a knackered version of windows?

mejinks - my modem sucks. My dad impulse bought it a few years ago and I never got a new one. Some crappy Buffalo one that i've never really liked. Also, if i had been hacked, wouldn't system restore have no effect?

Sorry I'm not on much to answer but I'm at work most of the day. I don't really have much time to check the things admiral huddy suggested now as i'm supposed to be going out but if you could explain them in a bit more detail i can get on to it asap.

Thanks

Oh, yeah, that green light is on.

The windows I installed is windows xp pro with sp2 already, then upon installing it I downloaded all the latest updates off windows update.

Spose, we should go on to step 2? IRQs? :p

I just had the problem again!

I went away for a bit, came back and the internet wasn't working.. tried to connect to the modem.. wouldn't work. This time though I went into the command prompt and typed ipconfig and it showed this.. does it help at all? I tried to ping 127.0.0.1 as you can see (I forgot whether it was 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.4 so I tried both.. and I also tried to "pint" it :P)

System restored and it started working again. (last restore point was just before I updated the NIC drivers a little while ago)

Just installed the latest drivers again and then it stopped working. Doesn't seem to like the latest drivers.

Sorry if i'm posting a lot.. i'm just hoping that these symptoms will help you figure out the problem.

I'm gonna have to keep the NIC drivers as they are.

Edit:

It might not be that the latest drivers break it. I just noticed that it seems like everytime I run the program "registry fix" it stops working. Could it be that this program is deleteing a registry file or something like that, which is causing the problems?

I don't know, you tell me? I just got it because I used to use Regcure and then I went on google and found a place that compared those types of programs and Regcure was second to Registry Fix, so I downloaded that instead.

It deletes all old registry keys and crap and I'm thinking it is deleting something for my modem or internet or something. I haven't run it for a while and I haven't had any problems. Does it sound like it could be that causing the problem?
