Strange problem...

Hi, (sorry this is a bit long winded, it was hard to explain)

I had a problem with my old PC just before I upgraded it. About a week before I got all my new stuff the internet just stopped working. I tried to access the page for the modem (I have to type in 192.168.1.1 in web browser, then it should bring up the options), but that wouldn't work, just kept giving like an error 404 type thing. So I restarted and it posts ok but then when it got to loading windows it just slowed right down, and then showed my background but none of the icons loaded or the task bar or anything. For a couple of days I thought it was broken, but then one time I left it for like 15 minutes and it finally loaded windows. I tried to sort the internet again with no luck, in fact I also found that windows firewall wasn't working (it gave some error about not being able to load ICS or something). I tried unplugging/disabling the ethernet, etc, to no avail. I then backed up my things and formatted and then it worked fine. I have since bought all new parts off OcUK and put them in (the only things I didn't change was the PSU, DVD drive and Sound card) and it has worked fine for about a week. But just now it happened again, internet stopped working, couldn't access the modem menu and then restarted and it took 10 minutes to load up again. Tried a system restore to earlier today and it started working again. Then 5 minutes later the internet stopped working and I restored again and it's working now. So I decided to post on here before it happens again.

I don't see what it could be other than my modem doing something strange to my ethernet?

Any ideas?
Thanks

Ok, your TCP/IP is installed correctly.

The next port of call is the NIC.. Is the NIC link light light on?
Check you have the correct and upto date NIC drivers installed.

Check the system IRQs. NICs usually occupy 10,11 or 5 iirc..

Check also you have the correct and upto date NIC drivers installed.

Lastly, can you access web pages via IP address? try 212.58.226.232 which is www.bbc.co.uk, if you can ping the IP but not the URL, then its a resolver issue somewhere. Check the DNS settings.

Can you post your ipconfig screen :ipconfig /all

thanks

Ignore this if you will, I know it can be a pain when 50 people all try and help at once, it can end up just confusing the issue

I think you've got a broken windows install.
Did you reinstall windows when you upgraded or did you just replace the hardware and fire it back up?

Generally if you are replacing a large chunk of hardware, you need to do a reinstall of windows, otherwise you could get all sorts of screwy problems.

The fact you had problems before you replaced your hardware would suggest that there isn't a hardware fault, and that it is all software related.

There are ways of avoiding doing a complete reinstall (Sysprep and others), but it's best to do them before you replace the hardware. However in this case given that it looks like you had software issues before I doubt this would have helped.

In short, a reinstall of windows is your best option.
You could do a repair, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't cause more problems than it solves.

What modem do you have? I'm thinking maybe too many half open connections, especially if the modem/router has been configured poorly. The fact that windows firewall should stop working makes my spidey sense tingle with cries of haxored. I could be wrong though.

When you get back on the net, download a program called Hijack this from Merjin.org and do a system scan.

Also, can you update the firmware for the modem/router?

well... seems like I have a lot of things to try..

Admiral Huddy - err.. NIC? :p I know quite a lot about PC's so you don't have to go into too much detail, but this area isn't my expertise at all. Could you explain what NICs and IRQs are? and DNS settings? sounds so familiar.

little_crow - I replaced my hard drive with the upgrade too so it is a completely fresh install of windows.. however, my windows was being a bit fishy during install, first couple of times i booted from the disc to format and install the first time, it failed a couple of times before it got to the formatting window.. can't remember what it said, something about a corrupt something.exe. Could it be a knackered version of windows?

mejinks - my modem sucks. My dad impulse bought it a few years ago and I never got a new one. Some crappy Buffalo one that i've never really liked. Also, if i had been hacked, wouldn't system restore have no effect?

Sorry I'm not on much to answer but I'm at work most of the day. I don't really have much time to check the things admiral huddy suggested now as i'm supposed to be going out but if you could explain them in a bit more detail i can get on to it asap.

Thanks

Yeah sure.. Network Interface Card . Some are built into the motherboard but are still refered to as NICs. Is the RJ45 jack that plugs into your modem. They'll be a LED beside it showing as connected?

Look at that first before I explain the rest...

When you installed Windows, did you update with SP2 and all the latest hotfixes?

Oh, yeah, that green light is on.

The windows I installed is windows xp pro with sp2 already, then upon installing it I downloaded all the latest updates off windows update.

Spose, we should go on to step 2? IRQs? :p

I very much doubt it is an IRQ problem but it's worth checking...

Head off to the control panel>System>then select hardware tab..

Click on Device manager>View and select "Resources by Connection". Then collapse each item.. Any problems will be highlighted here.

If your Network card is in the IRQ 17 or over range then that's fine because it will be using the "swapable" devices.

Can you check that you are using upto date drivers for the NIC? Is it onboard or a seperate card.

I just had the problem again!

I went away for a bit, came back and the internet wasn't working.. tried to connect to the modem.. wouldn't work. This time though I went into the command prompt and typed ipconfig and it showed this.. does it help at all? I tried to ping 127.0.0.1 as you can see (I forgot whether it was 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.4 so I tried both.. and I also tried to "pint" it :P)

System restored and it started working again. (last restore point was just before I updated the NIC drivers a little while ago)

Just installed the latest drivers again and then it stopped working. Doesn't seem to like the latest drivers.

Sorry if i'm posting a lot.. i'm just hoping that these symptoms will help you figure out the problem.

I'm gonna have to keep the NIC drivers as they are.

Edit:

It might not be that the latest drivers break it. I just noticed that it seems like everytime I run the program "registry fix" it stops working. Could it be that this program is deleteing a registry file or something like that, which is causing the problems?

If the Ping 127.0.0.1 isn't working then TCP/IP is not configured ot installed properly.

Control Pnl>twork Connections>right click on your connection and selected properties> Under the general tab, make sure all the TCP/IP protocols are enabaled (ticked).

Do this, then try the PING (not pint) again.

Hang on! Registry Fix ?!? Not the same program that the guy in America is having to pay loads for because it was un-necessay spyware?

I don't know, you tell me? I just got it because I used to use Regcure and then I went on google and found a place that compared those types of programs and Regcure was second to Registry Fix, so I downloaded that instead.

It deletes all old registry keys and crap and I'm thinking it is deleting something for my modem or internet or something. I haven't run it for a while and I haven't had any problems. Does it sound like it could be that causing the problem?
