Strange problem

Hi guys, there seems to be a strange problem that takes place everytime I'm playing a game with some intense action e.g. cs 1.6 or cs:source.

When I am for example really going for it, jumping, strafing, firing small burts, fastswitching, either against another person or group, I get major slowdown. It doesn't seem to be a fps issue as it the fps stay relatively stable.

I don't know whether it is down to my cpu, which is nice and cool, graphics card 8800 640mb GTs, or my maxtor hdd. I am taking a guess and assuming it might be my hdd, as this has been known to be rather sluggish.

I am just wondering if anyone understands this, and may know what this could be.

spec:

core 2 duo 6400
2gb corsair xms2 ddr2
nvidia 8800 gts 640mb
maxtor SATAII 160gb
win xp pro

I use direct cabled connection to a d-link g604t router using pipex adsl.

I defrag weekly.

I use AVG anti-virus plus the normal windows firewall and defender protection.

It's weird, I'm not entirely sure it is internet based, sometimes this happens in single player games too.
