Strange problem

Hi guys, there seems to be a strange problem that takes place everytime I'm playing a game with some intense action e.g. cs 1.6 or cs:source.

When I am for example really going for it, jumping, strafing, firing small burts, fastswitching, either against another person or group, I get major slowdown. It doesn't seem to be a fps issue as it the fps stay relatively stable.

I don't know whether it is down to my cpu, which is nice and cool, graphics card 8800 640mb GTs, or my maxtor hdd. I am taking a guess and assuming it might be my hdd, as this has been known to be rather sluggish.

I am just wondering if anyone understands this, and may know what this could be.

spec:

core 2 duo 6400
2gb corsair xms2 ddr2
nvidia 8800 gts 640mb
maxtor SATAII 160gb
win xp pro

how are you connected to the internet? I used to get this slow down with linksys wifi drivers.

The symptons you describe fit with lag. Put up the connection monitor in CS:S.

Have you defragged recently? Loading scattered caches from all over the disk might give stutter.

do you have anti-virus running? obvious, but one must ask.

I use direct cabled connection to a d-link g604t router using pipex adsl.

I defrag weekly.

I use AVG anti-virus plus the normal windows firewall and defender protection.

It's weird, I'm not entirely sure it is internet based, sometimes this happens in single player games too.

Are you using onboard sound?

My daughters PC gets a bit laggy etc when playing half life when there is masses of action going on.
That is the onboard sound (or was)
