Just thinking - for cars with vents and scoops in the bonnet, what stops the rain getting in?

Or does it not matter?

The rain generally gets in but it shouldnt matter too much on most cars, iirc this was a slight problem on Sunny GTi-R's, I could be wrong about which car but im sure it was a jap car.

Ive had the hosepipe under my bonnet and it ran fine after. I think I did wrap the distributor just in case, probably would have been fine without though

Distributors can often let water leak in and would probably cause slight running problems until it was dried out, probably nothing more. Not really recommended fully hosing down an engine, but often it'll cause no problems.

It'd just drip onto the intercooler with an Impreza?

Er, Lancer Evo etc I'm not sure, I guess it doesn't matter due to it not being a huge amount of water that gets through. My engine often gets splashed when going through puddles or spraying the inner arches when washing it, everythings pretty much sealed up (electricals etc).

The MR2 engine lid has actually got holes in it to improve cooling. It *does* have additional plastic sheeting fitting underneath to channel water to non-important areas to the engine bay though.

It can be a pain to get the engine running properly if the weather has been hammering it down though

Not really - as intake systems are typically routed and trapped so that water cannot enter them - so regardless of wether it was raining or not, or driving through shallow standing water, you would be fine.

mine has a scoop on the bonnet that flows air over the exhaust manifold

there is a little plastic rain catcher there

So, that's what the Valver's vent is there for? Do they have a habit of catching on fire or something?
