Hi,

I have a Samsung Spinpoint F1 with a lot of data on it, I've installed it to my new PC from my old PC where it worked fine however in my new PC I have a very strange issue that I hope maybe someone else has experienced?

If I plug the drive in a chain of power of Sata power cables it wont spin up and wont show in the BIOS or windows, if I give it its own power connection to the PSU it will show in the BIOS and spin up just as it gets into Windows but wont show in Windows unless I specifically restart where it show normally, if I shut down I go back to square one

I have ruled out the SATA ports

Any ideas please?

whats the old board and new board? be sure to run latest mb bios and try in ahci mode if you havn't already

personally id be looking at the molex/sata power connections, seems its intermittent in showing up in the bios ect

Thanks

Both boards are very similar, Was Gigabyte 870A now 970A

BIOS is latest and only version, AHCI mode enabled on the port for all drives and tried a port with AHCI disabled, tried different cables and ports but still the same issue

Its currently now decided that its not showing again after restarts, its really odd, when it works it works and when it doesn't it doesn't, it seems to get it to work I have to man handle it for a bit!?

check all your power/sata connections and the plastic connectors on the hdd itself, wiggle the molex plugs as they are always misaligned(the pins inside)

Tried multiple different connections, literally just swapped it to another bay with completely different power and data connections, clunked a few times on boot up then died which its done in the past, personally I think its a power issue which I'm going to confirm now by powering off the PC, switching it off at the mains and then back on I'm willing to bet the drive will spin up but wont show until I restart

And exactly what I said above has got the drive to spin up and show in Windows

Shut down, kill PC power, boot up, drive spins up when windows loads but doesn't display until restart

How very strange, if I shut the PC down now I'll have to do the same process again to get it to show

idk

does it show in the bios each time? or just no display on the screen till you reboot?

could be faulty hdd or a mb/bios bug, could try an overnight cmos clear/mb battery out then see if its any better
