Hello guys.

Very weird situation here. My brothers PC has started to smell bad and I think the smell is comming from the PSU.

It's not your typical burning smell, it's a smell like a kind of rotting food .

If I actually smell inside the PSU, the smell is really bad. Has anyone come across this problem before? It realy has baffled me... The PSU fan seems to be spinning fine.

Any information is appreciated.

Dead animal of some kind?

Zee germans... again...

Seriously though to OP is it the smell of capacitors? They smell very distinctive and not like your normal burning smell imo, tbh if it doesn't smell right it might be an idea to check out a new PSU, because in the end is it worth taking the risk?

Check it for stability and if still unsure RMA it if its still under warranty

EDIT: now where is semi-pro waster so i can say 'told you it was coming, it was gonna happen'?

Hey guys and thanks for the replys. To be a bit more precise, the smell smells like polish that has singed, I can't really get more precise than that. My brother said he used some polish around his case yesterday.

We have only noticed the smell today though.

I think I'll just get him to buy a new PSU, as said above it's not really worth the risk.

Any more information would be appreciated if anyone else has some ideas. :)

Thanks

Maybe the polish got sucked in through the psu fan and has started to burn?

Could you not just take it apart, Give it a clean with a paintbrush (un-used) and then put it back together and see if the smell persists, Capacitors do smell rather odd when they are about to pop, Maybe it could be on the way out, but, least it wouldn't cost you anything to take it apart an give a nice clean, then hoover away the excess dust. Good luck :)

i wouldnt open up the PSU if i were you.. but if you do wear thick rubber gloves..

and not touch it with anything conductive

Great, all I need to hear as I'm about to get an Antec case + PSU.

If one of my PSUs started smelling it would be disconnected from the mains immediately and replaced. Not worth the risk imo. (especially since I leave mine running 24/7)

Er, unless you know what you are doing & the risk involved, I'd be wary of that. I do it 'cos I am aware & am careful.

That is also True :D I just assumed he knew that, metal + voltage = hair standing on end hehe

But yes, If you open it up, Make sure you are wearing some rubbers :)

I've heard of people with a nut allergy playing Russian Roulette by eating Revels, but this sport of cleaning a PSU while wearing multiple condoms is new to me.
