Strange steam problem

used cc cleaner, couldn't find any sign of steam anywhere.

Tried installing steam on all 8 partitions on my pc and still nothing.

Yup,looks like a major ballsup from steam :(

I had initially just installed Steam directly onto a hard drive. Ie. f:/

So on opening F all my steam dlls etc just sat there, along with a steam apps folder.

I created a new folder called Steam, dragged my steam exe file in there, dragged my steamapps folder in there..

Ran the steam exe. and all was restored :)

But ive got no sign of steam anywhere on my pc and when i click on the exe. file it wont install on any of my hard drives.

It wont let me install steam on any of my hard drives/partitions

Yes - you cannot install it to the root of a drive.

This is due to the new way that Steam allows you to install games to any drive - just simply make a "Steam" folder on any one of those drives and it'll work perfectly.

all sorted now phewww :)

Thanks for the advice confused, works fine now....just need to install 400gb of games again :(

A hint for the future - you very rarely ever need to "uninstall" or even "install" Steam.

Just pick up the Steam directory, move it to your new machine, and just run "steam.exe".

On some rare occasions, you may need to delete the "clientregistry.blob" file.

^ this has never failed me.. 400gb of games never deleted.

I've had the Big Picture beta for a few months and never got any of this.

Best thing to come of this fault is that since its release Sleeping Dogs could never pass loading screen on my PC. But now that I fixed this problem it runs perfectly!. Weird!

Encountered this last night on my OH machine, only way I got round it was a fresh install onto her c: drive for now.

Just make sure to take ownership of the files once moved. I had my Steam folder on it's own drive which meant permissions were messed up between installs, led to a rather annoying problem with Supreme Commander 2.

I used to do this on quite a few occasions with different hard drive's.

This problem really confused me and thats why i deleted everything, ive got 100mb connection so it wont take long to install the games again.

Thanks for the help guy's :)

I've been having other problems with this recent Big Picture update. Now every time Steam is running is causes applications to freeze momentarily every 8-10 seconds. Very annoying when scrolling a web page for example and you can see the CPU activity for Steam spike in Task manager. Every desktop application seems affected. I haven't tried a game yet though.

Then just recently it started messing with the volume for Winamp with it fluctuating, trying to regulate it or something depending on the volume level.

I can only assume it's the big picture mode. Is there anyway to just disable it as this is very irritating? I haven't found an option yet or any launch options. I guess Valve will update it soon enough but I haven't seen anyone else complain of this particular problem.
